HESPERANGE, Luxembourg (CP) - Iain Hume scored in the 69th minute as Canada defeated lowly Luxembourg 1-0 on Wednesday, rescuing the Canadians against a soccer minnow ranked 66 places below them.

The Leicester City striker broke the deadlock in an uninspired match at the Stade Alphonse Theis when he raced down the left, leaving a defender in his tracks and scooped the ball over the onrushing Luxembourg 'keeper.

It marked the first goal for Canada for the 22-year-old from Brampton, Ont. It came in his 14th appearance for the senior side.

Luxembourg is ranked 152nd in the world by FIFA, compared to No. 86 for Canada. The two teams had only met once before, with Canada winning 2-0 some 32 years ago.

Slightly smaller than Rhode Island, Luxembourg has a population of about 487,000 - roughly the same as London, Ont. Its soccer team took a beating in this round of World Cup qualifying, losing all 12 matches while being outscored 48-5.

Canada's next match will be a friendly against FIFA No. 74 Austria in Vienna on March 1, 2006.

Luxembourg is 2-89 in its World Cup qualifying history, with wins over Portugal in 1961 and Turkey in 1972.

Canadian coach Frank Yallop did not call in all his top players, electing to rotate them between the Luxembourg game and a 2-1 loss to Spain on Sept. 3.

Forward Tomasz Radzinski (Fulham, England) and midfielder Julian de Guzman (Deportivo la Coruna, Spain) were not summoned after playing in Spain while fullback Paul Stalteri (Spurs, England) was not called in for either game because his wife is expecting.

Goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld and midfielder Sandro Grande had to pull out of the squad for Wednesday's game through injury.

Still Canada did field veteran striker Dwayne DeRosario, defender Kevin McKenna and midfielder Jim Brennan.

Forwards Stephen Ademolu and Will Johnson both won their first cap for Canada.

Well done Ian... more of the same on saturday. it was actually quite a nice finish.

That's good news, his confidence will be high going into the match against Burnley. I also heard Tiatto talking on Talksport this morning about Australia's success - he was asked about Leicester City's season and he said that although we've had a slow start things are starting to turn around and Levein has done excellently with the young squad and hopefully we can push for the play-offs now. He came across very well to be honest, even when asked who he was going to kick up in the air on Saturday. :038:

Sorry to be a bit of a misery about this - but is 1 goal in 14 appearances very encouraging? Hume looks like a decent footballer but the chances of any major goal return look a bit doubtful to me.

Bloody misery;) , I think you are right Redditch, we have quite a few good footballers in our side at the moment, the big problem is we do not have a finisher. MDV has knocked some in, but we all know he is not the goalscorer we need. The good thing is Hume has scored and hopefully give him a timely confidence boost, he is young enough to develope further, But as the saying keeps coming up 'it takes time'

hume doesnt look like a young player because of confidence or whatever but due to his lack of form his confidence is misplaced. hopefully back to back games with a goal will make him get the same amount of chances as (if my memory is right) the coventry game, but the ball will go the right side of the post.

First of all he needs to be given a consistent run in the side. The trend which has emerged of alternating Hammond & Hume looks like a bit of bad management and a justification of throwing money away on Elvis.

The problem is that Hammond came to Leicester expecting to get first team football...and he just is not worth a place. The most likely attacking force for us is currently MDV and Hume and that's not likely to be any great shakes.

On another thread we have looked at the Tommy Wright situation. I understand that Wright is not an adequate player for Championship football but my guess is that if you played MDV and Hume, we would be more likely to get a goal out of Tommy Wright coming on for the last 10 minutes than from Elvis.

Completely agree. No player can settle being given alternate games. And they should hardly need resting when they return, so I'd like to see the same strike force Saturday and Tuesday - and my vote goes to Hume

He's up there with Heskey and Crouch as an international goalscorer then :icon_eek:

Spot on, although Hammond has looked dangerous up front with his pace, it is clear that he is lacking something when it comes to sticking it in the onion bag and it could be the same reason on the settled part that has been mentioned with Hume, Hammond looked better when he played on the right wing, taking people on and getting crosses in.
As I mentioned on another thread, CL is now playing a more settled back four and look what has happened there, so lets hope he adopts the same up-front.
When MDV was out I would have prefered to have seen Elvis and Hume up front rather than opting for Dublins experience and leadership, the brain is there but the legs can't keep up anymore, but agree the starting two should be MDV and Huuuuuuuuuume when available.
