Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy will answer England’s call again this week, after being included in Roy Hodgson’s latest Three Lions squad.

Capped for the first time in a friendly against the Republic of Ireland at the end of last season, Vardy’s reward for an excellent start to the new campaign is a place in the squad for the forthcoming European Championship qualifiers in San Marino (5 September) and at home to Switzerland (8 September).

Vardy is one of 14 City professionals that could feature on the international stage this week, as Barclays Premier League action takes a week-long break.

Gökhan Inler could line up against his Leicester teammate after being called up by Switzerland, who also host Slovenia (5 September).

Christian Fuchs has been included in the Austria squad for games against Moldova (5 September) and Sweden (8 September), while Andrej Kramarić could feature for Croatia against Azerbaijan (3 September) and Norway (6 September).

Andy King and Blackburn Rovers loanee Tom Lawrence are both in the Wales squad for their fixtures against Cyprus (3 September) and Israel (6 September), while Kasper Schmeichel will report for Denmark, who face Albania (4 September) and Armenia (7 September).

Further afield, Shinji Okazaki’s Japan host Cambodia in Tokyo (3 September) before travelling to Iran to play Afghanistan (8 September), while Jeffrey Schlupp’s Ghana take on Congo (1 September) and Rwanda (5 September).

Riyad Mahrez’s Algeria are due to face Lesotho on Sunday 6 September. Of City’s young professionals, Oldham Athletic loanee Simonas Stankevicius leads the way after being named in the senior Lithuania squad for games against Slovenia (4 September) and Serbia (8 September).

Ben Chilwell has been named in the England Under-20 squad for a double-header against the Czech Republic, while Brandon Fox and Elliott Moore are both in contention for the England Under-19 squad, who take on Germany (4 September) and Croatia (7 September).

That is impressive. It was not that long ago, we were pleased if Andy King got called up on his own!

Stat from the BBC, Vardy is the only forward in the squad to have scored in the league this season.

Hope they give Vardy a decent run out but can't really see that happening unless someone gets injured.

Vardy has been fantastic this season.

The usual.hard work and closing down that you expect but his first touch has improved massively, his build play is very good and he's showing an intelligence that I didn't know he had. On top.of that he's looking confident in his own ability at this level.

Brilliant striker.

Edit; he should be scoring more though.

Well, I would pick Vardy way ahead of Rooney on form at the moment. Rooney has looked off the pace in all matches so far and his passing is very poor.

I would be tempted to go with Vardy and Kane if I were Hodgson. Both are enthusiastic runners and could provide international defences with a real nightmare if together. Rooney has been really poor so far this season.

Bollocks.Rooney scored a hat-trick against **** all in the pretend round of the CL so is now clearly world class again.Utd fans have been saying so on forums all week so it must be true.

It'll be very apt if he breaks the scoring record against San Marino since scoring in piss easy qualifiers against utter shite is what's enabled the overrated bellend to get most of his goals in the first place.
Gary & Sir Bobby would be clubbing together to hire a hit man in any sane world.

Because Gary and Sir Bobby never scored against shite?

Because Gary and Sir Bobby never scored against shite?

Of course they did.But in both their days there wasn't the proliferation of shite there has been for Rooney.

They played against the USSR not Moldova & Georgia.Yugoslavia rather than Macedonia etc.

Gary scored 10 goals at World Cup finals.Rooney's goalscoring has been conspicuous by it's absence in major tournaments. He's always been overratted.Good player certainly but world class? Never close to it.Nobody outside England rates him at all (well maybe Singapore & Malaysia) Proof of the pudding was a few years back when he threw his toys out of the pram & got himself a new contract. The only transfer speculation was a brief flicker of interest from Chelsea that came to nothing as fast as it appeared. Not so much as a vague stirring of interest from any of the big European clubs as they knew damn well the fee would be ridiculous & they could get better for less.

Emperor's new clothes & always has been.Same as Beckham only not quite on the same level of ridiculousness. But then nothing is.

Shit team were even more shit back when Gary played though. We'd hammer Turkey 8-0 and moan it should be more.

Am I getting a slight whiff of dissatisfaction with Wayne Rooney? Anyone else feeling that?

Rooney has been the best England player since Gascoigne and has been playing under immense pressure since the age of 15.

He has been disappointing in major tournaments...but he has hardly had the supporting cast afforded to Gary and Bobby.

The Rooney hate is a weird one for me.

Vardy up front every game, Dusty Bin and whoever you like for the rest. 72-o every game for the En-ger-land and we win the world cup. I'm off to Ladbrokes.

Christian Fuchs has picked the Austrian starting eleven for their game on Saturday. Crikey, He'll be knackered.
