Probably doesnt wanted to get stick for the last 4 or 5 months of his contract, if he had admitted that he had chosen to leave of his own accord despite Leicester's frantic efforts, to keep him then the likelihood of the fans turning against him would no doubt increase, but by making this statement it leaves it open to intrepretation.

De IJslander zal een contract tekenen dat hem voor 4 jaar aan de Alkmaarse club bindt. De international, geboren op 25 mei 1980 te Akranes, kan op meerdere plekken op het middenveld en in de voorhoede uit de voeten. Hij maakt pas volgend seizoen zijn opwachting in Alkmaar. Gudjónsson, na Steinsson de tweede IJslander in de selectie van Louis van Gaal, komt deze zomer transfervrij over van de Engelse club Leicester City.
De 25-jaar oude Jóhannes Karl Gudjónsson, roepnaam Joey, speelde eerder in Nederland. Na een korte periode bij het Belgische Genk in het seizoen ’99-’00 speelde hij een jaar voor MVV voordat hij in dienst trad bij RKC Waalwijk. Daar speelde Gudjónsson twee seizoen, voordat hij medio 2001 werd verkocht aan Real Betis Balompié. Na een tussentijdse uitleenperiode aan Aston Villa maakte de 17-voudig international in 2003 de overstap naar Wolverhampton Wanderers, om tot slot aan het begin van dit seizoen te worden verkocht aan Leicester City, zijn huidige club. Hij begon zijn sportieve loopbaan in IJsland bij IA Akranes

Joey Gudjónsson has informed the technical management of AZ that as of next season he will play for the team from Alkmaar. AZ already had an agreement on the terms and conditions but Gudjónsson didn't want to commit himself straight away and asked for some thinking-time. The Icelandic player will sign a contract that will bind him for 4 years to the club from Alkmaar. The international, born 25th of May 1980 in Akranes, can play in several places in midfield and as a forward. I heard from a colleague, who asked CL why he didn't have Joey as captain, that he didn't rate him that much because he was always drifting out of position. Perhaps, with CL gone, Joey will feel more appreciated, and if he hasn't already signed a binding contract, might review his position.

Also heard, from a different source, that RK thought that CL was the most arrogant sh*t he had ever worked with. No wonder the players would not play for him.
