There was a lot of publicity years ago in manchester about a topless barber-shop opening. The windows were all blanked to keep out prying eyes, but decorated with pictures of alluring young ladies. Naturally the punters were queueing down the street on opening day, but when they got inside they found 3 middle aged blokes, built like stokers with their shirts off, combs & scissors in hand,.

Canal Street is a much more recent innovation - In those (pre-legal) days the place for a pink pint was the Union Tavern on Princess Street, next to the Canal. I suppose it made "hello sailor" sound innocent
