CARLISLE United are on the trail of Leicester left-back Tom Kennedy as manager Greg Abbott steps up his bid to replace stricken Sean McDaid.

The Blues boss – who has admitted McDaid is fighting to save his career – wants a new player in his squad in time for Saturday’s trip to Bristol Rovers.

And News & Star Sport understands that 25-year-old Kennedy has emerged as a top target.

The former Rochdale full-back has only made four appearances for the Foxes since joining the Walkers Stadium club in the summer.

And new Leicester manager Sven-Goran Eriksson appears ready to let the Bury-born player out on loan to get some first-team football.

Kennedy, nephew of legendary Liverpool left-back Alan Kennedy, was one of the stars of Rochdale’s League Two promotion campaign and was linked with a host of Championship clubs before signing for Leicester.

United are not commenting on the identity of any of their targets but Abbott said he was hoping to make an addition to his injury-hit squad before the clash with the Pirates.

“We have got to try to find the right one,” said Abbott. “It’s proving difficult but we are hopeful something might be done before the weekend.

“We’re trying our best to make something happen.”

I'd much rather lend them Lamey. Quite honestly, in the revolving door with the LCFC's managers name on it, it can only be a matter of weeks/months before we get one that thinks Kennedy is a good player.

People are suggesting that we are trying to get rid of Kennedy and they may be right. However, the idea that he is being loaned in order to get first team football makes sense. Whether Kennedy is part of the future or going to be discarded it is better to have him match fit.

In fact, I never realized just what a fascinating player John Curtis is.

After coming through a successful Man Utd youth team he played 7 times for them before a £1.5mill move to Blackburn where he won promotion back to the Prem.

Following this he played for 9 different teams, of which 2 were loan moves and 7 (including us) released him for free.

He was at one stage hailed as a future England captain and at 32 he now plays for Gold Coast United.

Personally he will forever be remembered as the worst defender I have ever seen in my time as a City fan – and that’s saying something !

I know one of his ex girlfriends from his time in Notts. She says he was a cock!
