laptop is knackered! virus etc

hi,

my laptop has a virus which means i can not get into safe mode, cant restore settings from a few days ago, cant access the internet, can't log in as admin and cant open most files. it's pretty knackered.

it's a dell with windows xp, i'm not very good with computers but any help or advice for sorting it out would be greatly appreciated.

the virus tries to make me download a fake virus scan system and enter my card details etc. not sure what to do really.

Is there anything on the laptop that you need to keep? Files, photos, music etc?

How were you trying to get into safe mode and what happened when you tried?

Give them your card details, no doubt their software will fix it :icon_wink

haha yeh no doubt.

trying to get into safe mode by pressing f8 when starting up then i can selece but it goes onto a blue creen with a load of writing.

yeh there are loads of photos and music i want to keep...

BSOD often indicates a hardware problem. Have you changed anything recently ... Memory, PCMCIA cards etc?

If your laptop is genuinely dead, then you can remove the hard drive and fit it into an external enclosure (about a fiver or so on ebay).

This will enable it to be plugged into another machine for you to transfer your docs and photos and priceless porn collection onto another pc or laptop. (ensure that it has good antivirus software to reduce the chance of the virus spreading).

Once you've transfered your files, you can reformat the hard drive and use it as an external storage device ... maybe to back up all your important files in case you get a problem!
