Well, well, well. We have ourselves a manager with a brain.
We won the game in the first half hour because we set up and played in a way that the opposition weren't prepared for. I've been crying out for something akin to that for about a year and finally we have someone with the intelligence and the guts to do it.
Gray was the 'unexpected' presence in the side, combined with the unusual positioning of Mahrez. These two effectively won us the game. It was a lovely first goal with a tremendous run from Gray and assist from Mahrez.
After that breathlessly impressive start, the game died from our point of view. We were pretty poor at times, with Fuchs giving away an obvious penalty which we really got away with and they were camped in our half for the vast majority of the second half.
I thought that Schmeichel and Maguire were poor. For me, both are close to deserving to be dropped as they are clocking up consecutive bad games. Morgan was superb and easily our most important player. He blocked everything and threw his body on the line time after time. A truly excellent performance from someone leading by example. Simpson aside, the rest of the defence owe him big time for that clean sheet.
Everton were exactly what I expected them to be. Completely disjointed and lacking any sort of game plan. Why don't referees book Rooney more often? He's such a dirty shit and his constant moaning to the officials must do their heads in as much as ours.
On Puel, it was a promising start. He did something smart and the players actually appeared to implement what he asked of them. The test for me though will be next Saturday in what is a huge game for our season. Before the international break and then the Man City game, we go to Stoke and if we can outplay them and get our fourth consecutive win, we may finally be off and running.
