Stephen Clemence caps comeback with Leicester City winner
Wednesday, October 14, 2009, 08:00

Stephen Clemence played his first full game for 18 months – and was also the match-winner – as Leicester City defeated Barwell in the Westerby Cup Winners Cup at Kirkby Road last night.

Clemence, working his way back to fitness after a serious heel injury, settled a tight contest with a penalty after 65 minutes in front of more than 500 supporters

There was a smattering of experience in the City line-up and the midfield of Clemence, Max Gradel and Astrit Ajdarevic would have easily graced a Championship side.

City had a good chance after 10 minutes but Adi Yussuf drilled his left-foot shot wide of the far post.

Gradel's trickery down the right was causing problems for the Canaries and he found room for a 12th-minute cross but Yussuf failed to connect properly.

Barwell were contributing to an entertaining contest and Kevin Charley had a good opportunity after 25 minutes but shot straight at Carl Pentney.

Barwell keeper Liam Castle made a fine instinctive block on the half-hour to deny Elliott Chamberlain who ran on to Cian Bolger's long punt upfield.

Clemence marshalled the midfield for City and his free-kick on the half-hour was deflected off target.

City full-back Luke O'Neill was booked for a late challenge on Liam McDonald and then Barwell's Adam Cunnington headed over the crossbar.

Right on half-time, Gradel's free-kick rattled the post and Castle made a fine leap to keep out Yussuf's follow-up effort.

An injury to Tom Parkes forced a City switch early into the second-half and Barwell enjoyed a good spell with Charley curling a left-foot shot wide of the post.

Gradel then made a terrific break at the other end but his shot flew over the crossbar.

But after 65 minutes, City took the lead and it was Clemence who scored from the penalty spot after Adam Knibbs was penalised for hand-ball.

Barwell: Castle, Wykes, Knibbs, N Green, Francis, Dutton, Towers, Julien, Cunnington, Charley (P Green 75), McDonald. Subs not used: C Hayden, M Hayden, Letts, Saunders.

City: Pentney, O'Neill, Blackman, Ajdarevic, Bolger (Moore 46), Parkes (Milnes 65), Gradel, Clemence, Chamberlain, Yussuf (Hicks 77), Schlupp. Subs not used: Ambrusics, John.

Ref: T Hollidge (Wigston).

Attendance: 502

"the midfield of Clemence, Max Gradel and Astrit Ajdarevic would have easily graced a Championship side"...

I'm not so sure about that?

What a great win, i'm really proud of the lads finally we have won some silverware which we can be proud off.

There are more names I don't recognise from that line-up than there are I do. Are they mainly just players from the academy?
