Thanks very much to all those who came along last night. I thought it was a very enjoyable evening and Matt's story about Nallis punching the spanish snorer whilst handcuffed to Dickov was very funny. Some very honest comments made by the guys and I thought they were all very good.

Just need to work on the follow-up now and it would be interesting to hear who you would like to see in this type of show.

Apart from La Manga 2 we heard nothing about the Micky Adams years which were a very interesting time. It is easy to forget that he produced a team that won automatic promotion - something which has eluded every manager since. His departure was quite sudden. I felt that he never recovered from La Manga and heard rumours (of a dubious source) that he had lost the dressing room to the influence of Martin Keown. I do not know how true this is. It would be interesting to hear Alan Cork talk about it.

There was no mention yesterday of Dennis Wise. I seem to recall reading that Matt Elliot pulled Wise off Calum Davidson. It would be interessting to hear Paul Dickov talk about those days. Bill Anderson must have some stories he was not able to write at the time.

You never know what you are going to get at these talks. I attended a series of talks at Filbert called "Soccer For The Spectator". I expected the highlight to be a lecture by manager Frank O'Farrell but he was far too discreet. I expected the worst to be "Problems Of Refereeing" by Graham Hill. It was brilliant including such gems as "People complain about Norman Hunter but that Bobby Kellard of yours is worse - a right little bastard."

Thanks to DG, Lazzer, and the others for the stuff in this thread. Live and learn.

Apart from Nigel Pearson ;-)

You are right. I should have said automatic promotion to the Prem. He did that with some very good players (Walker, Muzzy, and Dickov(, some over the hill players (Taggart, Elliot and a favourite of mine Deane) but also some very poor players (Lewis. Tricky Trev and who was that poor left back we had).

I used to see Micky Adams running by the canal/river bank his face contorted with stress which is not surprising given the problems of his reign (Dennis Wise, Administration, La Manga) but his teams were very effective and hard to beat in the Championship.

One thing struck me about his resignation which was so far as I know voluntary. His decision cost Alan Cork and Dave Bassett their jobs. In the same way Gary Megson leaving ultimately cost Frank Burrows his job.

Left back Alan Rogers?

Just reading an interview with Dennis Bergkamp who says that his greatest goal was either against Leicester or Argentina. He says he knew exactly what he was going to do when the ball arrived to him, no luck that Newcastle goal. 'Pure' he describes it has.

A bit off topic but interesting story about when he was younger, he used to be criticised in the Ajax youth team for the way he strolled around and stroked his passes about. To prove them wrong, he was willing to wear a helmet with a camera on his head during a training session practice match to show his vision of the game.

Also says the one of the best ever assists he did was against us in the Highbury Invincibles game.

That Bergkamp goal against Newcastle just oozes quality

Oh yes it does. It's easy to look at Matt Elliot as some lumbering idiot when Bergkamp turns him inside out like that, but he was far from it. A good defender made to look less than average by a world class center forward.

Sitting in the front of the Carling Wing Stand I had a clear view of Bergkamp's own reaction to that goal. It was a look that said "Not only have I just scored the greatest goal of my career, it's the best hat trick as well, and neither you nor I will ever witness anything as good ever again"

F**k that for a game of soldiers, where's Walshie ..... WAAAAAAALLLLLSHIIIIIIE!
