FIFA is very saddened to learn about the tragic incidents which occurred at the Samuel K. Doe stadium in Monrovia three-and-a-half hours before Sunday's qualifying match for the 2010 FIFA World Cupâ„¢ between Liberia and Gambia.

FIFA is currently investigating the circumstances together with the match commissioner and the Liberian Football Federation (LFA). Further information will be provided when the situation has been ascertained.

Avec un stade de 35000 places pris d'assaut par 50000 personnes, la rencontre Liberia - Gambie (1-1) a été le théâtre d'un drame. Le dernier bilan fait état de 10 morts par suffocation.

Une personne admise à l'hôpital, victime de suffocation avant un match le 1er juin entre le Liberia et la Gambie dans le cadre des qualifications à la CAN et au Mondial 2010, est décédée, portant le bilan à dix morts, a annoncé mercredi à l'AFP une source hospitalière. "Une dixième personne est décédée", a déclaré à l'AFP le docteur Winnie Scott, médecin-chef de l'hôpital John F. Kennedy de Monrovia où sont traités les blessés. Seize autre blessés demeuraient sous traitement "mais leur vie n'est pas en danger", a indiqué le Dr Scott. Un précédent bilan fourni mardi par la police faisait état de 9 morts et 14 blessés, dont un dans une situation critique.

D'après des témoins, les victimes avaient été incommodées par la forte chaleur et avaient été transportées à l'hôpital avant le coup d'envoi du match Liberia-Gambie (1-1), concernant le groupe 6 de la zone Afrique pour la CAN (Coupe d'Afrique des Nations) et le Mondial-2010. Le gouvernement libérien a annoncé avoir ouvert une enquête pour établir la cause de cet accident, et promis de prendre les mesures nécessaires pour que ce genre de situation ne se reproduise plus.

La Fédération internationale de football (Fifa) s'en est déclarée "très attristée", et a annoncé également avoir ouvert une enquête en collaboration avec la Fédération libérienne de football. Selon des témoins, quelque 50.000 personnes avaient pris d'assaut le stade Samuel Doe de Monrovia, où s'est joué le match, alors que sa capacité d'accueil maximale est fixée à 35.000 spectateurs.

L'enceinte était déjà remplie plusieurs heures avant le début de la rencontre, en raison notamment de vente frauduleuse de tickets.

The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) is saddened by the tragedy at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex on Sunday, 1 June, when nine football fans died and more than a dozen others were injured, as a result of overcrowding during Liberia’s World Cup qualifying game against The Gambia.

The Mission wishes to express its condolences and sympathies to the bereaved families and loved ones of the victims.

As announced by the Government of Liberia, the staff of UNMIL will join the people of Liberia, at 12 noon on Tuesday, June 3, to observe a moment of silence in memory of those who died, and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.

UNMIL is ready to support any inquiry to establish the cause of this tragic incident and in order to prevent its recurrence.
