The reason I chose Sheehan is because I thought he was probably our best option at LB.

Johansson - while he a good central defender I never feel comfortable with him at left back. I'm not talking about his attacking qualities. He's slow and every time he plays at left-back he seems to make the mistake that leads to the opposition scoring.

Tiatto - doesn't have position sense at left wing so I'd be worried about him leaving gaps in our defence. Plus his rash challenges are better suited to the midfield than the penalty area.

Gilbert - with him and Sheehan at the moment I find it hard to make a distinction, I've seen them both play about the same amount of times. The reason I pick Sheehan is because he seems able to take a good corner and free kick, which to me just edges him ahead of Gilbert.

With Johansson at LB we really struglle going forward. He looks nervous and uncomfortable on the ball. Hence why most of our play goes down the right hand side.

Is this based on every viewing of him - or mainly on what you saw on saturday? I think he was really affected by the barracking he was getting from the home crowd, presumably for his rx-Blackburn credentials. I have rarely seen a player affected so badly by such treatment.

---------------Douglas---------------

Maybury-McCarthy-Gerrbrand-Sheehan

----Williams--Gudjonsson--Hughes----

Hammond-----------------------Hume

---------------de Vries---------------

subs: Henderson, Nissa, Stearman, Kisnorbo, Hamill

The old 4-5-1, 4-3-3, it's all the rage and I think we've got players to suit, too.

No Smith!!??!! Not even on the bench?!?

I suppose he could replace Hammond or Hamill, it's easy to forget loanees :-P

Having said that, we've not got him for long, maybe it's better to work on improving the players we've got. It's not like we're at any risk of winning the league is it?

Great team IMO. I would try and incorporate Smith into there somewhere though. I think Williams, Gudjohnson and Hughes is by far and away our best midfield.

I really can't see CL playing this side though. :frown: :frown:

Worth a try!

I've not read any of the other suggestions so I apologise if its already been said but.....its time for 4-3-3!!!

In this awful league, sides are always going to concede sloppy/poor goals - due to the general lack of quality defending - whilst most sides are usually going to create/spawn (in our case, not always score!) a reasonable amount of scoring opportunities. I believe there is a case for CL now adopting an attacking mentality, especially with the type of opposition we'll be entertaining at the Walkers in the next few days. Sides will always get a chance down here, so we may as well strengthen our attacking numbers. I know this sounds like the old 'Keegan' philosophy - we'll score more than you and don't worry about the defence, but I truthfully believe if CL was to remove the attacking shackles that we currently play within, we'd at least see a team that poses a threat rather than at the moment, where sides like Brighton/Burnley/QPR can come here knowing that if they keep it tight for half an hour, the players will get anxious (and the crowd get very egdy too) and their opportunities will definitely come.

Why not have MDV as a sole target man with 2 men accompanying him from either flank (but not neccesarily as wingers) i.e. Hume & Smith or Hughes & Smith. This could allow us to play 3 tight across the middle of the park i.e any combination of Kisnorbo/Gudjohnsson/Tiatto/Hughes/Williams.

The back four should really sort itself after the recent period of tightening up (bar Saturday!).

Rant over.....

Williams was given his chance against Soton, and singularly failed to take it. He gave the ball away with monotonous regularity - is this the 'skill' his supporters refer to? Kisnorbo keeps possession better, and hardly anyone seems to like him!

Midfield three not too bad an idea, but Hughes/Joey/Kisnorbo.

No Smith? No Gerrbrand? A defence that is so different from the one that has been doing so well?

I think you should go back to starting polls!

In this league there is little wrong with that philosophy. It worked for Kevin Keegan and his Man City side that he got promoted out of this league, and if he hadn't retired I wouldn't object to having Keegan here!

I like the look of jb5000 team, but can not see CL doing it.
If I was looking at the most likely team I would say.

Douglas

Maybury
Gerrbrand
Paddy
Nils

Hammond
Joey
Hughes
Smith

MDV
Hume

Hammond IMO has'nt got a future playing up front, but think he can do the job on the wing, Sylla (although I stick up for him) needs to be dropped for few games to give him a kick up the arse. For me we need pace, pace pace to give opposing defenders/midfielders something to think about rather than us bloody worrying what they are going to do, get the other team playing deep, we have seen what happens when we do it!!

I think Tiatto will start tonight, don't know where though.Maybe on the left of midfield with Smith on the Right?
