In Windows, is it possible to lock individual folders on the same user profile?.

e.g. If "Trevor" has a folder full of vids for the discerning gentleman, can "Trevor" password protect just this one folder?

"Trevor" doesn't want suggestions about hiding folders etc, just whether or not the folder can be locked.

Thanks in advance.

There used to be a way in Windows 98 etc, but not sure if it's still there. Will do some research, are you on XP or Vista?

Trevor could also put the folder in a zipped folder and password protect it.
Trevor probably needs access to these folders on a regular basis and doesn't want to keep zipping and unzipping them.

I think they took the option off later versions of windows as they expect that you will use various different users and have passwords to enter each one. It’s the only way I can think to do it without using 3rd party software.

assuming it's XP, you can right click on the folder, select 'properties' , then 'Sharing' tab & check the 'make this folder private' check box.

This will only work for hiding the folder between different User accounts.

Open up My Computer

Select Tools >> Folder Options

Select the View tab

In the list find the entry that says "Use simple file sharing (recomended)"

Remove the tick from the box and OK

Trevor can now browse to the folder he wants to restrict.

Right click on the folder

Select Properties and then Security.

You can now select which users have what rights of access or deny access altogether for all but Trevor's user account.

Hope this helps

Nope.

I was referring to different people using the one single account, Trevors.

If Trevor doesn't want his wife to see the naughty pictures of his girlfriend, he'd be safer to put them on a USB memory stick.
OK, agreed.

But Trevor is also working on lots of projects that are not X-Rated, nor top secret, but nonetheless doesn't wish for people to view them as they are still "works in progress". Trevor is notorious for losing memory sticks and the like and would just like to be able to lock a folder and leave his PC open for everybody to use.

I guess 3rd party is the only way to go.

I'm amazed that more people aren't questioning why this isn't possible in Windows.

The Trevor thingy was a joke BTW, I was referring to me. I can't believe you all fell for it :icon_wink

It has never been possible the way that you require so who could we question about it?
I considered writing a stern letter to my parish priest, but never got around to it.

You little rascal, you had me hook line & sinker.

I was sure there was a way in 98, you could write a script on a folder and it would password protect it, guess not though.

In a way it would seem logical, however I suppose they provide the capacity for multiple user accounts to get around this.

Not as far as I know there wasn't, I could be wrong, but that's very doubtful. :icon_wink

Yep, not the most elegant solution though.

After a bit of digging around, this looks like it could be the way forward for Trevor, True Cypt
