For a club with such a proud history of world class keepers, it amazes me just how little people know the difference between a good 'un and a bad 'un. Poole was garbage yet is held in high esteem. Similarly, the likes of Walker and Keller were ludicrously overblown.
Ture. Walker was half the keeper he had been for Tottenham, and even at his best wasn't much cop. Keller's distribution was bobbins but he was an O'Neill player so he's automatically held in higher regard than he should be. It's the same for a lot of his signings. Not all of them, obviously. For example, everyone knew Fenton was shit.
On the other hand, Flowers had a marvelous first season with us and is hardly remembered.
Bit harsh that. Surely we all know how valuable Flowers was to us?
And Martin Hodge was an excellent keeper for a while before going off the boil rather badly.
:017: Erm...
There have been some pure shockers that we can all agree on like a Douglas or a Kalac.
I have a list of them...
There have also been those that promised much and disapointed like Andrews or Muggleton.
I always cringe when I hear their names mentioned with genuinely good keepers.
Come to think about it, we haven't half had some shite in goal over the last twenty years or so.
A sample of shit keepers off the top of my head: Poole, Ward, Muggleton, Kalac, Arphexad, Keller, Walker, Coyne, Royce, Douglas, Henderson, Pressman, Stockdale, Martin, Warner, Ikeme, Kirkland, Weale, Ricardo, Logan.

Was Poole really a shit keeper? Apart from a couple of games in his last season I thought he was a very decent dependable keeper.

Excellent in his first couple of years.

KP was most certainly not garbage, and doesn't deserve to be in BMs list.
I'd add Mark Grew to the list, though.

My recollection of Poole is he was adequate on his best day. I was still a cynical, impatient teenager when he left the club though.

Kevin Poole was FAR from garbage. And I agree about Walker and Keller being over-rated.

I recall him lacking any presence. He needed his central defenders to do all the work for him. He was too short, getting chipped and generally passed too easily - for example when Cambridge put five past him one Sunday lunchtime. Or Newcastle put seven past him. And he was awful in the play off match v Swindon.

Not the worst by any means, but generally a very mediocre keeper.

Didn't Richard Smith go in goal one home match too? I've got Watford at home in my head early 90s? Could be Oxford?
Oxford. Muggleton got injured, Smith played the second half in sticks. I have other reasons for loving Richard Smith :038:

He was my first ever favourite player, purely because we share the same surname. (And the Palace goal)

That's the one :038: my first FA Cup game. Wonderful memory.

And the first time we had won an FA Cup tie in years.

I still hate Owen ****ing Archdeacon.

I though that Poole and Ward were good goalkeepers?
