Sheffield United's chairman came out today as saying the Neil Warnock's style wasn't 'cut out for the premiership'. If that's so, it's only more so for Martin Allen.
I have to say I'm really disappointed by this appointment, and all the sounds coming out of Milan's Mockery suggest it's a done deal now, the more and more I think about it.
It's true we need someone with a bit of passion to get the players going a bit more, but we also need someone to reform the entire coaching and fitness setup at the club- is there any evidence Allen has the know-how to do this?
We need someone who will be able to attract good players to the club and keep them here- will Allen's supposed lack of man-management skills achieve this?
We need someone who can build a side that will get into the Premiership and then stay there- will the long-ball and no plan B do that? Look at the three promoted clubs this year for your answer.
At the end of the day all this episode has done for me is remind me that Milan Mandaric might well have appointed Harry Redknapp at Portsmouth, he also appointed Graham Rix, Velimir Zajec and Alain Perrin. He's clearly a very talented businessman who is able to bring a hell of a lot to City, but I'm beginning to think that his hands-on role is going to be bad for the club in terms of his own appointments and in potentially driving off better applicants for the manager's job.
I hope I'm wrong, and don't think that I won't be cheering the club on, but I really can see the next close-season break being just like this one- a lowly finish, a search for a new manager and some more of our talented youth being put out on the scrapheap.
My thoughts exactly. We're getting another wishy-washy manager whose appointment will lead to a confirmation and consolidation of the City fans' reputation for getting rid of one manager after another.
