Mills has a song?
The only reason I am sticking up for Mills is because I see what he does for the team. At recent games I have had to put up with fans constantly moaning about him. I therefore started to loudly comment everytime he won a tackle/block and they soon start to stack up. So much so that the moaning fans seemed to shut up...now they just complain about Beckford.
On a different point it will be interesting if Bamba gets back into the team once he comes back from African Cup. Assuming Mills and Tunch stay fully fit.
Yes, the Mills' song is the same as the Steve Walsh/Jack Hobbs song.
I'm not doubting Mills doesn't do his part but defending is not all about putting in blocks and tackles or winning the ball in the air, in fact in the modern game, it's very little about that. It's about keeping the ball.
A player who reads the ball well and cuts out opposition passes is a far better defender than a player who wins the ball through crunching tackles or throws himself in front of the ball making blocks as reading the game wins possession, making blocks and tackles doesn't and a defender who can't pass and is constantly gives the ball away and I never really see Mills cutting out passes and I still question his ability to read the game in that sense and distribution like his, in any position, is a hindrance on the side just as much as a player who makes constant defensive errors.
Mills does make some good tackles and blocks and wins the ball in the air (but the directing of his headers is still questionable, though not as much as Bamba's who imo is very poor at directing his headers) but his distribution and average reading of the games are what make me question whether he is really the kind of player to lead us forward.
Mentioning Tunchev, if we get the player back we saw in League One then that is what we want imo. Very good at reading the game and extremely composed in possession. Doesn't make the challenges/blocks that Mills makes, but is a far better defender. Just hope his injuries haven't ruined him.
Similarly, by what Reading fans are saying, Reading's defence is much better this season with the much more intelligent defender Kaspars Gorkss in it over Mills, despite not having the flashy blocks or tackles. Mills reminds me of Hobbs and Kisnorbo in that while he's in the team making the blocks and tackles you think he's an excellent defender, but once he's gone, you realise his game was too flawed for him to be
that good.
Meh. Maybe I'm just biased because Mills isn't really my type of player, so to speak.
