Drinkwater and Iborra have been out injured. I don't think James would have been first choice otherwise. James is a squad player, it's what squad players do - they fill in when 1st choices are out.
 
Forgot we'd signed Iborra. As for Drinky, if Chelsea genuinely are offering £30m we should snap their hand off. Would still be short of options though with King/James/Iborra (if fit) to partner Ndidi.
 
James kept Drinkwater out of the team, until his injuries, because he was the better player. Drinkwater undoubtedly benefited from playing alongside one of the worlds greats Cambiasso. I genuinely do not understand the quite vitriolic criticism he receives. He has been out of action for the best part of two years, spent a few months with a Championship side, and he's back in Premiership team side because of an injury to Drinkwater. To expect him to be 'up to speed' is quite frankly ludicrous, such criticism says more about his critics and their lack of insight, than it does about the player. Give him a few games maybe eight to ten, and then see how he's going, hopefully Drinkwater will struggle to get back in the side by then, nothing wrong with some competition for places in the starting eleven.

Odds on him collapsing in a heap in the middle of the Old Trafford pitch in a bit and needing stretchering off?
 
Whatever anyone thinks of him there were threads last year where many people were saying with full confidence he would never play again for LCFC. He's already proved many wrong.

That's what I like a bit of genuine optimism from someone whose glass is always half empty. How you would ever think that that scenario is even remotely funny or worth betting on is beyond me.

BN, trying to justify your remarks by using a Monty Python sketch, adds nothing to your earlier post. Those guys were genuinely original and immensely funny, your neither original or funny.
 
James showed at Old Trafford why he should not have been given a new contract and why he should not be in our first team squad.

Great article. I'm not sure why so many people are so keen to write him off. I think he's better defensively than Drinkwater and has been more positive going forward than Drinkwater was last season.

A great article indeed and offers insights into things that otherwise may not be known. But sentiments aside, I just don't feel James has what it takes to fit our game plan.

We usually have a midfielder who focuses on sitting in front of the back four, and another that picks out the passes for Vardy to latch on to. James is neither here or there for these two roles, defensively not solid enough and lacks the vision and passing range for the latter. If we had a different tactic (or manager), it may suit James' game.
 
I think the dig at Ranieri for not giving him token minutes at the end of the title winning season is a bit bollocks. There were players who actually took part in that season who didn't get to play either.
 
I have a lot of time for James as a person. It's awful to have gone through what he has given the career he has chosen. As someone that was also in hospital this week with a kidney stone, I have more sympathy than most for that particular challenge.

However, the romance of this story needs him now to kick into a new gear and become a regular for the team and I just can't see it.

So far, he's been here for 5 years and played 87 times. That's 17 appearances per season. And we've given him a new 4 year contract on that basis? That contract is probably worth about £10m to him over that period and he clearly recognises this as his security for him and his family.

I don't begrudge him that personally. I just think it's absurdly generous of the club. He's got a massive amount to prove and there is little to no evidence that he's got the talent, fitness or toughness to achieve what's required.
 
Bit harsh. Take out the two years he couldn't play and he's nearly at 30 games a season

Maybe the contract recognises the club has paid him well for laying on the treatment table for 2 years, and is loaded as a small basic and a bigger match appearance and performance segment.
 
Some people's glass is always half empty with some people's always half full.

There are some people who unfortunately don't own a glass at all.
