I took the plunge and dished out £600 on an L reg Merc, a classic from 1993 with 127000 on the clock.

Drove from Leeds to Putney and back over the weekend and it was a joy to drive.

Good stuff Joe! Hell of a lot of car for the money. Wouldnt like to see your repair bills when something goes wrong though!

Had a D reg one about a dozen or so years ago, automatic, like sitting in your front room driving a bus. Loved it.
Three pieces of advice. First, dont get attached to the badge on the front if you have one. Second, spend the early days of ownership finding an ex Merc mechanic who'll do any work for you cos Merc dealers charge the earth. Finally, don't go too far from a petrol station.
And if you have one, don't let the wife drive it (still haven't forgiven mine for continuing to drive it with the temp warning light on).

I have no wife so no problem. It did Leeds to Putney Bridge and back for just over £55 in petrol. (420 miles). Girlfriend's sister's boyfriend is a mechanic so shouldn't have problems there. I have no badge on it so have nothing to get attached too.

Need to fix the drivers automatic window and I think the front brakes need replacing (brake warning light flickers on and off when braking - any ideas?)

I paid £600 in cash and feel I have got a bargain.

p.s. Anyone want a Fiesta?

Merc at Loughborough only used to charge me £15.00 for a new fitted badge (the standy uppy one). Bloody good job considering.

Joe try to find an internet forum for old merc owners they will give the best advice in my experience (not of mercs but of other makes).
