Because he might not stay at Luton. He doesn't get on with the board at all. This is from November:

My money is on either Newell or Cotterill to walk and come to us without any compo being paid - the ideal situation!

FOXES CHASING NEWELL TO RULE

LEICESTER want old boy Mike Newell to become their new manager - and quit Luton Town to take over from Craig Levein, writes ALAN NIXON.
Newell is the name at the top of their wish-list, with his work on a budget impressive at both Luton and, previously, Hartlepool.
The ambitious up-and-coming Liverpudlian manager, who recently made the news for claiming he had been offered bungs, is keen to manage a bigger club and Leicester have greater potential than Luton.
There would have to be about £300,000 compensation paid before Newell made the move and he would want assurances over money being available to spend.
And he has popular support within the club he played for a decade ago.
Others in the frame include Gary McAllister, an old Foxes favourite and a former team-mate of Newell's.​
