My wife has just got a new Sony Ericsson W395 phone and it says in the instructions that it should be initially charged for 3 hours.

She is desperate to get it working but I have told her to charge it and wait.

Is the charge period a must do or is it just a precaution?

Any advice?

Hours or years? :102: Why would three hours be a problem? Women :icon_roll

It's a must do.

Thanks Boc.

I had put it on charge already. She will just have to wait until the morning.

For the first four or five charge/discharge cycles, it will be better if she can completely discharge the battery before recharging - and then again charge for a full 3 hours before using. It's also sensible to do this about once a month. These actions will prolong battery life.

I had heard/read that the new type of phone battery doesn't lose much of it's charge over it's life and that allowing it to discharge completely was no longer necessary. I wasn't too sure, so wanted further opinions.

More or less correct, yes. Battery technology has moved forward enough that it's no longer necessary, but don't go charging it up every few hours. Probably best not to do it unless it's about 75-80% discharged at least.

If it's a Lithium Ion battery, which it is very likely to be. Observing chraging cycles etc will make virtually no difference at all.

**** me, this is the most excited I've been in ages!

Why? Are you doing something unspeakable with your phone battery?

Just inspired him to charge his phone right up so he can keep the vibrate function on for ages.
