He did some great stuff for us. Went to better himself at a stupid/unfortunate time and has been at duffer clubs ever since. Expected more from the lad tbh. Hope his stay there is short and he turns it around though....

It’s always slammed shut isn’t it? Why not slammed open? Is slamming things open a thing? If not, why bother with the tautology of specifying slammed shut?

I wish the guy well. His important role in our history is secure forever.
However, we killed his career by giving him that 4 year contract in 2016. We've killed others careers in similar ways too.
Nobody would pay him what we were paying him. He was being substantially overpaid for the player he was. As such, he has been drifting out of the game for 2-3 years.
Loans at Swansea, Derby, Rangers and Huddersfield were mostly disappointing ones. He was losing his reputation bit by bit. And now the he's off our payroll, nobody wants him.
He should have taken a pay cut to get a decent move when he still could back in 2017 or 2018. It was his choice to sit on his contract and he's probably going to end up with a nothing end to his career as a result.
