Leicester City are hoping to land Portsmouth midfielder Gary O'Neil on loan.
Pompey manager Harry Redknapp is keen for the 21-year-old to sample regular first team football and is willing to loan out O'Neil.
Micky Adams' Leicester are believed to be one of two Championship teams who are keen to take O'Neil on a three-month deal.
O'Neil captained England's Under-21 side against Ukraine on Tuesday evening and is on the fringes of the Portsmouth side.
But Redknapp is not yet willing to send the youngster out on loan until he has drafted in a replacement.
Redknapp admits that, once he has snared another midfielder, he is prepared to ship out O'Neil so the midfielder can gain experience.
O'Neil had a month-long stint at Walsall last season and Redknapp believes his young charge will benefit from a similar spell away from Fratton Park.
"There's no way I could let Gary go on loan at the moment," said Redknapp. "I haven't got enough players.
"But if we get someone in, it's something we could do. I think it would do him good."
