PS4 kind of been announced already though not shown what the console will look like or exact specs as yet. Expected release of 'holidays 2013'.

Xbox 720 due to be announced shortly with conference available to watch on link if you're as bored as me. No point speculating when it will be confirmed very shortly.

Anyone got either on their Christmas lists this year as both expected by then? Should be interesting to see how the fair against each other coming out at the same time rather than a huge gap like last time.

I'll probably leave it a year or 2 before I get one as not a massive gamer anymore so can't justify release costs but still interested to hear what they'll be doing with the new gen, looking forward to more entertainment/streaming side of things.

I'm hoping that the game makers will continue to support the old consoles for a good few years. I only replaced my xBox 360 a few months ago after it finally gave up the ghost.

I wonder what the game prices will be like, too.

Interesting that Microsoft have confirmed there will be no backward compatibility. I wonder how many people will hold off for exactly that reason.

Seems a strange decision. Surely there would be some sort of "compensation" for it. Perhaps a free download version instead?

I would hope/expect a 360 emulator would be made available at some point. I understand Sony will be looking into doing a PS3 emulator for the PS4. Whether or not it'll be free remains to be seen.

Backwards compatibility not really a biggie for me but the main shot to their own foot for me is coming from the fact that games will be one time use only pretty much as to use a second hand game, you'll have to buy a pass before you can play any aspect of it and not just online. If Sony do not do the same as this then it could be a bit of a non-contest ending in Sony's favour.

The entertainment side of the Xbox did look interesting but most of the features just seem like the sort of features that are used to show what it can do, but in real world, is much easier doing it another way rather than having to shout at your Xbox at 2am to turn off. Also be interesting to see how many of the features make it across the pond to the UK and they already have quite a few extra marketplace features that we do not have.

That'll be tricky for both as they are moving from 32 to 64 bit architecture. Time consuming and costly. I can't see it happening personally.

I've had at least one of the latest generation consoles since my first megadrive but I don't think I'll be bothering with any of these new ones, hardly use one anymore.

Already told the lad to dream on if he thinks he's getting one of these for Xmas. Sack of insipid bollocks.

Insipid in what way?

As for the consoles, Microsoft is killing itself with this always online and registered games crap. I buy nearly all my games for cheap from cex 2nd hand and my Internet connection is shitty. Those decisions from microdot are insane and by the sounds of are going to drive loads of people away. I'll definitely be going back to Sony for this gen.

Sony have yet to deny or confirm rumours they will adopt the same approach. Given its what the major games developers want then I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Sony forced down tis route too.

Honest.

This is all new to me..... Should I ditch my Commodore 64?

Can you point to a mass of reasons to make it a must-have console?

There's only one reason you should ever get a console and that's the quality of the games which can be played on it. Just found it strange someone was writing both off as being insipid before barely any games have been announced.

Nonsense. What about peer pressure or obeying how the advertisements have programmed you?
