It took an age because they don't have phones or indeed any technology in Sunderland. the message was sent by carrier pigeon.

Maybe the club took an age to get back to Sunderland because we were playing hard to get, and thought it might get a bigger bid from Sunderland if it looked like we weren't interested in selling him.

Or maybe we were looking into ways to spend the money before getting back to Sunderland, or speaking to other clubs who were also interested in buying him.

Niall Quinn is new to management, what might seem like an age to him might be normal in the football world.

Fair points I guess, although Clive Clarke's former club obviously met his expectations.

Agree Webbo.

Also, Quinn says they enquired about Maybury at the same time as Clarke. Well if that is the case then the report below suggests the enquiry was 3 days before the season kicked off at Luton. By then Kelly would have already planned and prepared his starting 11. We went into that game with high hopes. I can understand why Kelly 'took an age' in Quinns words. It sounds like we got back to them after the Burnley game if the team selections are anything to go by which could have been 1 last chance for Maybury maybe?

as our club posted that they were in for maybury surely we thought he was going to leave, or were hoping so. massive wasted opportunity as far as i can see

I don't believe this deal is dead yet. Both clubs appear to be jostling for the best bargaining position.

A lot could depend on how well Robbie Elliot does for them on Saturday imo. He's on a 1 month contract i believe, which takes him up to the transfer window closure.

get into him, **** him up

Ir's also interesting to note from the report that "Quinn had identified the Irish defender as a player who could strengthen Sunderland's left side". Maybury is a right-sided defender - square pegs/round holes!!

We took an age to get back to them it says.

Whose fault is that?

Probably that dozy plank that was on the moan in on Monday night

Only one person makes the decisions on players coming and going (unless it is a stupidly high VALUE of course) - RK.

....and we clearly want to sell. Shame we couldnt pull our finger out before they signed someone else.

We do not have to sell.

This is a case of selling to fund a bid, hence RK's decision.

We are still over-budget on 'player-costs': this might not mean that we *must* sell, but I am sure that we will sell a player like Maybury if we can. He is not seen as an essential any longer

I certainly do not think that the deal is dead, as others have stated it is probably both teams trying to negotiate the best deal they possibly can. It would appear that the Sunderland bid was around the 250k mark, whilst we appear to value the player at 500k, wouldnt be surprised to see the transfer go through within the next 24 to 48 hours for a fee around 350k.

Methinks Mr Quinn is not as stupid as he looks - this talk of Elliot may well be designed to improve his supposed bargaining position in relation to the probable difference between our valuation of Maybury and that of Sunderland. I would not be suprised to see a deal go through in the next ten days IMHO.
