Leicester City Football Club have agreed a loan deal for striker Odsonne Édouard from Crystal Palace, subject to Premier League approval.

The 26-year-old, who has previously spent five seasons at Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, joins the Foxes from the Eagles and will add to Steve Cooper’s forward options for the 2024/25 campaign.

A former French youth international, the striker has made a total of 95 Premier League appearances for the London side since his arrival in 2021, scoring 18 goals.

Speaking to LCFC.com, he said: “I can’t wait to get started. I’m really excited to be joining a team like Leicester City and to do what I can to help the team in the Premier League this season.

“There’s a fantastic squad here and I’m confident that the team has what it takes to be successful. I’ll be working hard to make sure I do everything I can to support my team and to show the fans what I can do on the pitch.”

Born in Kourou, French Guiana, Édouard progressed through the ranks of AF Bobigny before signing for Paris Saint-Germain in July 2011 and going on to sign a professional contract five years later. He was loaned to Toulouse for the 2016/17 campaign, scoring his first senior goal in November 2016.

In August 2017, Édouard signed a season-long loan with Celtic, and ended the season with 11 goals to his name – leading to a permanent move that would see a further four trophy-laden seasons in Scotland. In total, he scored 89 times for the Hoops and helped them secure four titles, two Scottish Cups and three Scottish League Cups before a move to the Premier League with Crystal Palace in 2021.

His Palace debut came in a 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, where he found the net twice as a second half substitute. The striker has since gone on to become a regular for the Eagles, with his eight goals in the 2023/24 campaign helping earn the team a 10th placed finish in the Premier League.

He will now link-up with the Leicester City squad for the duration of the 2024/25 season, with a home game with Aston Villa next up on Saturday 31 August (KO 3pm).

Could have been worse.

Just a shame we didn’t get a left back in, but can’t complain overall.

Can he play for us today against Villa or is it too soon?

I think he'll do well for us. It just requires Stevie C to manage him in the right way.

I just don't understand this infatuation with getting a left back. We have two more than adequate players in that position with a third who can play there perfectly well if required.

Too soon I believe, it would have needed to have been done by midday yesterday, I think, to be eligible to play this weekend.

Who are the two more than adequate players in that position?

A question for those that know this kinda stuff...

What options have the club got with Odsonne?

Can the club pay up the deal and return him to CP? Will that release the loan spot? When does the squad have to be named? Can we simply not select him in our squad? (gardening leave)

I'm assuming he has no interest in playing, showing no desire etc. Are we stuck with a dead weight?

It's obvious by now that we don't have the right to cancel the loan as part of our agreement with Palace. That was a negotiation error on our part.

The Palace manager has publicly stated that he doesn't want him back in his squad.

Our only option is to move him ourselves to a league on a different schedule to UEFA. Hence the link to the MLS last week.

Edouard would need to agree though.

Not cancel it, no, I accept that we haven't that option. But pay it up? Or continue it but not name him in the squad?

Whatever the contract stipulates, it's clearly not that we have to play him. So we can we go a step further and not name him in the squad. Would that free up the loan spot? I suspect not, I suspect by virtue of the contract that he is one of our designated loan players.

We have to figure nd him another club to go to. We have no right at all to send him back until the term of the loan expires.

This is absolute.

We ****ed up, again.

Yeah, I think we can just exclude him from the 25 man squad we name at the start of February.

We'd still be responsible for whatever we've committed to with Palace.

It would look so bad on the club though, it may affect our reputation with agents in future.
