Elaborate then

The Fall are one of those bands you love or hate I guess. The early singles like Bingo Masters Breakout, Rowsche Rumble and Lie Dream of a Casino Soul (with Mark Riley on keyboards) are classics. However, the albums are patchy at best and they have done some right drivel like the music for I am Kurious, Oranj, the period when Brix was in the band is best forgotten as well. Mark E Smith is far from a perfect human being and I think of him more as an idiot savant than a 'wasted pikey', but he is unique and there's not a lot of that in music. I don't think they directly inspired many people in Manchester (or anywhere) in terms of musical style, perhaps more in terms of attitude and being proud of their Mancunian bloody mindedness.

I agree with Joe (that felt strange :icon_wink ) I do think Greenday are anything like U2. Greenday realised American Idiot as a protest against Bush and the war in Iraq. U2 probably got Bono to go and have a drink with him and gain more media exposure! Also they sold out by advertising Ipods!

All I was trying to say was that Green Day are like U2 in that they have become packaged by their record company to fill a certain demographic and shift more units. Green Day are marketed as being rebellious and dangerous when all they really do is make radio friendly corporate rock music - and at the top of that ladder is U2. It's refreshing they have attempted to get a political element into one of their songs with American Idiot, but it's hardly the Clash doing White Riot in 1977 is it.

You and your obsession for Ipods! :icon_bigg

Unfortunately for U2 they lost a lot of fans who thought they had sold out as well as gaining a lot of stick from the music industry! but im sure that the fact you like them because of it has more than made up for it :icon_razz :icon_wink

I hate them I think they feckin shite. It's the ONLY thing I respect about them, the iPod link ;)

Bono sold out years ago when he took shares in lieu of royalties from Island after U2 suddenly went massive in the states with the Joshua Tree and Island didn't have enough cash. Today he is a businessman nothing more nothing less, he's even starting a venture capital bank! I think they did the iPod ads more for the reflected glory of being associated with a hip company and product rather than the money, although I'm sure that came into it!

Re - earlier comment on Pink Floyd

I Think they deserved the hype when they were still producing, what they did was original and interesting.

But the hype they get recently (particularly since Live8) is silly, by todays standards they are nothing special, it seems to be a social thing at the minute, they are cool because someone said they were, not because their music rocks. most of what they did, doesn't stand the test of time.

James Blunt, definately overrated IMO. The Darkness have also been a massive let down since "I Believe in a thing called love" another band who recieved too many plaudits for one song.
