Bill Shankley once said that football was more important than life or death. It was a very silly comment and I am sure he did not mean it because he was not a silly man. When we hear news like this we realise that all decent football fans share a common bond. R.I.P.

Shankley said it as a joke, it took on a life of it's own by lazy journalists looking for a pithy quote

RIP

I have talked football with fans from all sorts of clubs and never had a problem. For complicated reasons I used to travel to Leicester's away games at Birmingham, Villa, Albion and Wolves on a home supporters coach. I never made any secret of my allegience and I was always welcome there and back whatever the result. I have talled Beckenbauer and Charlton with Bayern supporters, heard Shilton praised in Liverpool and been greeted with laughter and enthusiastic agreement when I told Wolves fans that Eddie Clamp was the dirtiest player I had ever seen.

Football provides a common bond that transcends even language. The World Cup will bring together people from every continent. Not so long ago an away fan died on his way to the Walkers - an event that was met with proper respect and sadness by the club.

On rare occasions we realise that what binds football fans together is far greater than what divides them.
