Oxford defender Gilchrist retires
Oxford United central defender Phil Gilchrist has been forced to retire through injury.
He has been unable to recover from a persistent knee injury, which has troubled him for the past nine months.

"It's been a hard decision. One of the toughest of my life," the 34-year-old told Oxford's website.

"Every footballer wants to play for as long as possible but it's got to the stage where the injury is restricting what I can do on the pitch."

Gilchrist added: "It is also causing problems for a few days after."

Gilchrist, who joined Oxford for a second spell in June 2006, had been limited to just three appearances for the U's this season.

His career, in which he started over 500 senior games, also included spells with Hartlepool, Leicester City, West Bromwich Albion and Rotherham United.

imo he never quite did it at the top level but to play over 500 gaems is no mean achievment

Wasn't 100% sure but still some feat scoring at Anfield.

It's OK. I've been out most of the day and not had much chance to be pedantic - I thought I would start with you.

And BTW, it wasn't a case of 'some feat scoring'. He put it in with his heed.

I wonder how we would have assessed him if it wasn't for the inevitable comparison between him and Walsh/Elliott.

Did I ever tell you that I was born in the same town as Phil Gilchrist?

I always thought he was a decent player for us, and did suffer from the comparison you refer to. I was sorry when he left us, he was a more than useful stopper.

he was a decent player, considering that was back in the premiership when he was judged as well. met him after that game at anfield as well and he seemed a good bloke.

he did score the 2nd in a 2-0 win at Anfield

now excuse me for being pedantic but if he supposedly scored the winner at anfield in a 2-0 win isnt he supposed to have scored the first one???:102:
