Hello all. :)

Apologies to every one that's missed me in the past few weeks/months (none of you I'm sure!) but I've been busy desperately trying to salvage my job as the threat of redundancy has been over my head for a while now.

Unfortunately for me I was told on Thursday that my hard work and determination was for nothing as I was given my redunancy notice, I've got three and a half weeks before I'm out of a job.

Obviously being 21 it's something I'm finding difficult because I have no real qualifications or anything to help me find something new. I was just wondering if there was anyone who has been in a similar situation that can give me any help/advice?

Cheers.

sorry to hear that mhs, keep smiling and stay positive

Sorry to hear that mate.

I'm not sure this applies to all companies but when i was made redundant a few years back, we were allowed to enroll on any course we wanted and the company would pay for it. I enrolled on a forklift course just to give me something to fall back on in the future.

Luckily my place had other jobs going and so after 2 months on the lash with my redundancy money, i got a job straight back with my employer.

It's worth a question to ask about course's. Get yourself qualified on something. Forklift driver's are pretty much always wanted.

Not a course as such but I'm close to completing a Level 2 NVQ in Retail Management. Luckily I've got that on my CV, but apart from that I've got bugger all.

And as for Halfords, they are the tightest bunch of wankers there are. They are expecting us to smash budgets by 20% with less staff than ever. Quite how they are expecting to succeed I'll never know, but hey I don't really care any more.

Just remember it's not you who have been made redundant, it's your job.
Don't take it personally.

I got laid off after my short term contract expired at a Loss Adjustors company in January, I'm 23, I've got a couple of degrees in Journalism and I've been out of work ever since - it's an absolute nightmare. Making ends meet by working part time in a pub and signing on, I'm not a happy man at the minute!

A sensible post from Joe Fox, I reckon thats the first in the many thousands he has made!!

Best way to look at redundancy from a job you weren't that enamoured with, is to see as the kick up the bum you needed to change direction. Use the time to think about what you would really like to do and theres every chance you will end up better off in the end.

I've been strongly thinking of applying to get into university next year as I'm not satisfied to be working so hard my whole life for a poxy £12,000 basic. My current place is moving away at the end of the year so it wouldn't be a local job anyway meaning more expense and extra travelling time on my part so I'll likely be out of a job myself. I've been tempted to try and start my own business full time or as I said, go to university and get a qualification or two to enable me to get into the videogames industry as an artist/designer as that's one thing I'd really like to do. It's just additional education is so damn expensive, especially given that you aren't guaranteed to be any better off at the end of a 3 year course.... if the jobs aren't there then the jobs aren't there... :102:

My brother is finding it hard to find his first job and I have a couple of friends who were recently (within the last few months) made redundant and are still seeking full time work.. it's not easy that's for sure.

try Learn Direct too, they can advise you regarding courses you can enrol on for free etc. Hope you sort yourself out soon, was in the same boat as you but have managed to line up some temp work at last.

The games industry is ridiculously hard to get into. I have a friend who has 4/5 years experience doing high end 3D modelling but no games company will hire him until he gets videogame experience. I'd check the industry out very carefully before comitting money to the degree.

Its happened 3 times to me in my working life, and each time it was a very depressing period of my life.
You may need to be humble with your job selection at this moment in time, as there is very little out there. Imo just try and tick over with some temp work however mundane, until the situation improves and opportunities arise again.

GeT yourself down to all your local Currys/Comet/PC World. They'll all be taking on temp staff around now. Do your numbers over Xmas and they won't let you go.

I have my moments.

good luck

it's tough to dish out advice when i don't know what you're good at or like...

but i will say...being unemployed is being time-rich, organise yourself as though you were at work...even if you are signing on, you can be doing training (a lot is free for people on the dole) and you should also think about volunteer work, not only is volunteering doing some good, it looks better on your CV than "watching Trisha and youporn.com"

That is some good advice.... unfortunately MHS will probably only take notice of the last 4 words. :icon_lol:
