A young Leicester reserves side went down 2-0 to Southampton at their Staplewood training ground on Wednesday evening.
The Foxes made the long trip south just 24 hours after their Championship clash with Watford - and predictably fielded a youthful line up.
And that inexperience would tell against a Southampton side containing a number of first team squad members.
Kenwyne Jones and an own goal from Conor Franklin did the damage, and speaking afterwards City coach Kenny Black said his side had been beaten fair and square on the night.
He said: "We did okay for 25 minutes at the end of the first half, but they have come out a little bit sharper than us at the start at the second period.
"Their first goal came from a through ball that dissected our defence, and the second was an own goal from Connor Franklin who deflected a cross into the bottom corner.
"We had to rely on Paul Henderson who made a number of good saves in the second half.
"Over the 90 minutes a victory for them was probably a fair result. They had the better chances on the night.
"We were very young - Paul Henderson was really the only experienced player that we had in the starting line up. The rest of the side, apart from Levi Porter and Alan Sheehan, was made up of players from the under 18s.
"We went into the game on the back of a four match unbeaten run and again you certainly couldn't fault the lads for their efforts. But we will regroup now and come back again for our game against Charlton Athletic in two weeks time."
