If Darwin's evolutionary theory is correct, The Egg would always surely come before what we call the chicken. For example, say the creature that we call the chicken is step 'C' of the evolutionary chain.

A -> egg -> B -> egg -> C

But I Think that step A of the evolutionary chain would not have hatched from an egg.

I've seen chickens in the wild in Asia. Well, Red Jungle Fowl, which is yer basic chicken, effectively.

It's widely accepted that (probably egg-laying) reptiles started to grow feathers and eventually turned into birds. Never mind eggs before chickens, it was almost certainly eggs before birds.

If you want to make it more recent and specific to "chickens", Red Jungle Fowl laid eggs before domestic chickens existed, as did the birds that Red Jungle Fowl evolved from.

Therefore, it's egg before chicken. Probably.
