It was because there was yet another vulnerability found in the PHPBB program, and a hacker used it to attempt to break in. I spotted the break in pretty quickly and I managed to modify the part of the program causing the problem. I only updated the forum with the latest security patches a couple of weeks ago, but it doesn't take long for the crackers to find another way in. It was just after I moved the forum back to my own server, it made me wish I hadn't bothered!
