not if you want a player that can actually pass the ball it wouldn't

I think Simpson at RB would work well. We're hardly punting the ball upheld for someone to chase. There's a lot more passing and movement which means Simpson would make shorter and easier passes.

Of course it then depends on which rough formation we're playing. I only like Simpson if we've got a back four with Ricardo in front of him. Ricardo is so good at the attack side of things but also a decent defender so we've got double cover on the right almost.

I think Soyuncu will come in for Amartey when available. whether it's 3 or 4 is sort of irrelevant. Ricardo is up and down the right Amartey and Maguire either side of Morgan and Chilwell will likely be equally as attacking as Ricardo when we have the ball.
come on city.
want Gray to do well today. if him Maddison and Chilwell can click the media will get behind them all and we could be on to something.

Last Saturday we changed things because we were down to 10 men.
It wouldn't surprise me if we change the formation during the game, depending on how it's going.

I think that’s Puels whole thing. He wants player that can play multiple positions on the pitch so he can chop and change...which is all well and good but he’s sacrificing a lot to do it.

From his pre match comments Mark Hughes seems to think that we mostly still play on the counter attack. I wonder who he’ll blame this time if they lose.....

I can see it now. “Welcome to English football. Play out of position at right back.”

what exactly is he sacrificing? not twatting 60 yards hopefully for a striker to chase in vein?

I have never been a fan of too many versatile players because generally speaking they tend to be a jack of all trades and a master of none such as Amartey.

Having said that there are a number of versatile players who are strong in multiple departments but on the whole not so often.

It'd be nice to see an out and out right back who can defend if we're gonna use Ricardo in midfield. Imo Ricardo works better in position.

Think people could be right about it being 3 at the back - or at least changing between 2 systems as the match moves on.

Which makes a lot more sense of Amartey's inclusion.

On one today I see.

When you play a generalist like Amartey you often lose some skills in the preferred position that a specialist would bring.

At what ****ing point did I say anything about style?

And it’s vain.

Soyuncu will come in at CB when fit, I’ve seen nothing written to suggest he can even play right back

Well what exactly have we lost, Albrighton is steady nothing more, no one knows what Ghezzal has and Simpson was awful by the time he was dropped last season so what exactly has he sacrificed by selecting Amartey and Ricardo down the right?

Continuity for a start. Quality of delivery for another.

I believe sports (and other stuff) is often built on partnerships, especially when it comes to defending. Claude has a different approach. He’s the manager I’m just some wanker who covers sport. I believe a settled back four is important. But he’s paid to make the decisions, and will live and die by them.

Last week was the poorest I'd seen Albrighton play for some time.
Apart from the rush of blood one 1st couple of minutes against Man U, Amartey had a better game.

Let's see what formation we play before we get our knickers in a twist, people!

A settled back four is not that important IMO, we had one with Morgan, Simpson, Fuchs in and they were still shite....

We're going to have to wait a few weeks/months before Soyuncu and maybe Benkovic if he's good enough are ready to come into the fold and give us that extra quality to go alongside Maguire at CB but the RB issue baffles me today. Ricardo is perfectly fine there. He's put in Amartey who offers nothing so we lose some solidarity at RB and some offensive prowess going forward because we won't have Albrighton's crossing or Ghezzal's trickery at our disposal...

Simpson can hardly pass that is why he does not feature

Sky pundits on Soccer Saturday laying into the changes too.

Although Phil Thompson's main complaint seems to be dropping Jonny Evans when he has such vast experience - which he carried on about even after Jeff pointed out Morgan is older and more experienced.

Man City won 6-1 last week and made multiple changes today...
