crap 'urban' stuff
I hope that isn't a dig at hip-hop & rap music
Not in general. There has been some deverstatingly good hip-hop in the last 20 years, it's just that the BBC seemingly need to play a selection of weak modern 'urban' type stuff that is just commercial crap and has no honesty & passion in it.
I'm sure that the 11-14 year olds need their stuff on 6music.
I know what you mean, it seems that crappy stuff like 50 Cent and Eminem are getting all the kudos and airplay, when great hip-hop artists like Nas, Mos Def and The Wu-Tang Clan are getting no airplay
Especially seeing as 6 Music is a respected, alternative music station, although like most radio stations the stuff it plays at night and early morning (roughly midnight-5am) is a lot better than the stuff they play at prime time...
Nas' "hip hop is dead" got loads of airplay and hype by Radio 1 just last year.
Mos Def hasn't ever or never will be mainstream and his last album died on its arse in the US anyway so was never going to get played over here.
Wu-Tang haven't released an album in years but Gravel Pit, CREAM, Babies, Pinky Ring all got played to death at the time of their release.
50 Cent hasn't been played much as his 2nd album didnt do as well as expected, while Eminem was the worlds biggest hip hop artist for a number of years, released a seminal album in 1999 & 2000 and is generally regarded as one of the best MC's of all time.
Just like any form of music things go up and down, from 1998-2001 indie music was tripe and dance/pop music ruled the airwaves, Travis and the like were as 'rock' as you got until the Strokes released Is This It.
At the moment hip hop is in a rut, listen to Nas' album for eloquent lamblasting of its current state but it'll go full circle, just as guitar music which is dominating the charts at the moment, will go shite again for a few years.
rap = crap.
from 1998-2001 indie music was tripe
:icon_roll Honestly, people should actually listen to Illmatic and 36 Chambers before saying something so stupid!
I cant stand any rap/r'n'b/urban music of any type. The odd one or 2 'songs' are ok at best. I'd rather just completely avoid the genre and listen to something I know I'm going to enjoy. :icon_wink
36 Chambers? I'd rather listen to 36 Crazyfists thankyou very much.

It pisses me off when people slag off hip-hop jut because they've heard Eminem and 50 Cent, but that's because they're both shit. That's like hating all rock music just because you heard a couple of Oasis songs on the radio! If you actually started to check out some decent hip-hop you'd realise there's people out there making great, intelligent hip-hop with great lyrics that anyone can relate to, not just your 13-year-old American, far more than any of this Fratellis shite is...
feck all wrong with the fratellis mate although i am a big hip hop fan too love noreaga and wu tang tupac and biggy of course but hip hop is dead at the minute and also theres feck all wrong with oasis
I agree hip-hop is stale at the moment, like I said 50 Cent has turned it into image over music, but i was just pissed off that someone who clearly has no knowledge of the genre would call it crap
Like I say unless you like falling asleep there wasn't much there, and certainly not much that was in the charts for any great time.
Not that that is a barometer of quality I hasten to add but it is a reflection of depth of a genre.
Falling asleep How are the charts a "reflection of depth of a genre" and what relationship does depth (what ever that means) have to quality exactly?
