Strange flying things

Anyone know what these are? They are a cross between a flying ant and a wasp (pictured top left) and make holes in soft ground which they fly in and out of.

Ha! It's actually at the back of one of my work buildings. I told the staff I would investigate what they were.

Never told them I was going to ask on a football forum, they'd have laughed at me!

Could be a Mining Bee.

From a website about mining bees.....

"Their mines can be found in areas of sandy soil and are easily recognised by the volcano shaped mounds of excavated material topped by pencil diameter sized holes. "
