Anyway, they did a vote with fans to pick a new one. They were given five options:

Tis. But it was definitely what they were called at the time they decided to be black cats....by both mackems and geordies. Weird times back then. They also became a city after the city boundary went stupid. In the very south of Gateshead there's a council tip that's now part of the City of Sunderland. Obviously including Stig of the dump pushed the population up by the 1 they needed.
