If these results occur then the points accrued in the super 8 stage are as follows:

Australia - 12 points (14 points in total)
South Africa - 12 points (12 points in total)
West Indies - 4 points (6 points in total)
England - 8 points (8 points in total)
Sri Lanka - 6 points (8 points in total)
New Zealand - 4 points (6 points in total)
Bangladesh - 2 points (2 points in total)
Ireland - 0 points (0 points in total)

So it will be Australia top, South Africa in second, Sri Lanka in third and England in fourth place.

Australia in the Semi Final then I predict - and it'll be closer than you'd think.

We'll get thrashed by Australia and South Africa

We'll lose to Sri Lanka and West Indies

We will struggle against Bangladesh

We'll be lucky if we beat the Irish

I disagree. We've done well in recent ODI's against Australia, South Africa love a chase so it'll go on the toss, Bangladesh are there for the taking, Ireland is a non-contest, we'll thrash them and the Sri Lanka one will be tight. I did say we'd lose two matches though - we'll beat Ireland, Bangladesh and West Indies and one of the other three, probably Sri Lanka. That should be enough to qualify.

Sri Lanka, South Ifrica, Australia and West Indies for Semis.

Sri Lanka are going to be the winners.

20/1 at start of tournament. Glad I stuck a £5 on them - (and £10 on S.Africa - 6/1)

I think Australia, SL and SA will get the top three positions. Then its down to us, NZ and WI for the final spot.

It'll be a tough ask to qualify. Losing to NZ in the first game could really end up costing us. We'll need at least four wins and possible a fifth. Ireland, Bangladesh and West Indies are must win games. Then we'll have to sneak a win or two elsewhere.

Although tbh, if we did get into the semis then I certainly wouldn't write us off with Pietersen, Collingwood and Flintoff. If they have good days then they can win us games on their own.

...and Joyce

For the sake of the ignorant - me!! - could you tell us how the Super 8 stage is played and how the teams for the semis are then chosen.

Does each team play each of the other seven?

Does 1st play 4th, and 2nd play 3rd in the semis?

Each team plays everyone except the team that was in their group - so we don't play NZ. The teams that finished top take 2 points and their run rate through to the super 8 league.

Yes, 1st play 4th, 2nd play 3rd.

Ah! Now I understand the tables that you put at the start of the thread.

So the 2 points that NZ have got are the equivalent of having beaten us. And teams get 2 points for every further win?

Run rate - is that per over?

Yes, it's a run rate per over, it always is. I am probably having my most useful day of the year.

You have only part explained it.
It's calcuated like goal difference. NZ scored 210 from 41 Ovrs, works out to a run rate per over of 5.12 to (2 decimal places). England scored 209 from 50 Ovrs which is 4.18 pp rr over.

So you do 5.12-4.18 and that gives NZ a R/R of 0.94 and England have
-0.94.

And the run rate is worked out for the main table that way. The total is adjusted to every game's run rate difference.

So NZ currently have a run rate of 0.94. Australia is the next match, the Aussies scored 267 in 50 Overs, r/r of 5.34. New Zealand could only muster 203 in 45 Overs, r/r of 4.51.

So, 5.34 - 4.51 = a difference of 0.83

New Zealand take 0.83 away from their overall r/r making 0.11 for the table.
