Ex-Australia test player and coach of Shane Warne passed away aged 66.
I got to meet him early last year as I was due to play in a cricket match against him. He was playing for the South Australia tourist board and I was representing a Singapore ex-pat team. The game was rained off but both sides had taken time off work, so got stuck into the beer that was provided.
Other than being partly responsible for the scourge of English cricket over the 90s and 00s, I have to say he seemed a nice modest bloke with loads of stories to tell when asked.
His team held a joke Kangaroo Court for him, deeming the incident in Sydney 1970 which led to Illingworth taking his team off the pitch, had caused irreparable damage between the UK and Australia. Lots of fabricated evidence and tall stories but good fun.
