That possibility should have been factored in though! Making massive financial commitments based on assumptions such as "yeah, we'll stay up", which appears to be what the board did, is irresponsible and short-sighted.

The board under Elsom acted quite out of character for Leicester City in more ways than one......e.g. allowing Taylor to throw money around in a way no other Leicester manager has been able to do.

I assume that they never factored in the possibility of relegation and this lack of risk assessment/ management ended in disaster.

The Carling stand made back more money than it cost to build due to the extra revenue it brought in compared to the old stand it replaced (despite the short length of time it was used for)

One of the other possibilities being discussed before the stand was built was to rotate the pitch by 90 degrees, using the car park for the extra length needed in that direction. The old double decker would then have formed one side of the ground and the East stand and family stand could have been upgraded due to the extra space created by doing this. We could have had more options had we not sold off the terraced houses that lined the ground in a short sighted money raising venture.

As we didn't take that option we had to move if we wanted a bigger stadium

It wasn't that they didn't "take" the option - they could not get permission to build on the car park. And moving at that time was not possible as the ground was unsellable because of restrictive covenants that the council would not lift.

The timescale for all seating that had to be complied with due to the Taylor report was too short to resolve either of those problems (though later both Derby and Portsmouth were given extensions) so the carling stand was the only option available. And of course it attracted grants from the football trust as the preferred option would also have done at that time.

After it was built the council then agreed to lift the covenants.

Maybe I should have read my post more thoroughly and made sure there were no words which could have been read in such a fashion that would allow people to pick my point apart, (I apologise most profusely for this grave error :icon_roll).

I didn't actually say why they didn't take this option, just that it was one they were considering (which your post backs up) that they then didn't proceed with

The point of the post was really that the Carling stand wasn't the waste of money that people seem to be making it out to be
