demolishing a litre of Smirnoff at the moment, but Glenmorangie is all good.

Just noticed a post from Bob - thought for a minute there was only the two of us left up :icon_bigg

Why haven't the Beatles been mentioned yet? Oh yes, because they were crap and seriously over-rated, sorry, forgot that.

Yup, that'd be it.
The Westlife of the 60's.
Elvis was 'Boyzone' all on his own, which is quite talented in of itself.

Just so that these inspired posts don't get lost in the fog of hazy intoxication I think it's important to restate the obvious.
Pop Idol wasn't around in the 50's & 60's but it doesn't matter because the world still had to suffer Elvis & the Beatles.

To be honest Feriol I think you need to Exit Stage Left they're just Fly By Nights & you should have some Grace Under Pressure.
Their counterparts are all at Different Stages.

So thats How It Is eh?

I much prefer The Yardbirds from that era

Not really my pint of Guinness, but were ok.
What nauseates me is the way people just allow themselves to be led on what they are told is good music without having any critical input themselves.

To my ears the Beatles, and especially Elvis, are just prepackaged bullshit music, exact same as any mass produced bollocks teeny band of now days.

If Elvis was such a good singer why is it that I can do such a perfect impression of him?
I'm the worst singer in the world, not that it stops me, I'm Irish after all. but I can do a perfect, indistinguishable rendition of Elvis.

King of rock 'n' roll? my hairy arse.

I agree, most music, such as the beatles and elvis i could best describe as superficial. they have catchy tunes when you first hear them, but have no substance and i quickly get bored. Astoundingly, the more superficial the song, the more popular it seems to be.

i dont particularly enjoy elvis' music but i can appreciatate that he took what was really afro american soul music and virtually created rock n roll. without him there would be no rolling stones, no morrissey and probably no oasis or blur, so i think in some way we should all be indebted to elvis.

That's a bit like saying without Edison there would be no electric light bulb or without Bell no telephone or without Bayliss no wind up radio.

Sure these guys were the first, but if they didn't do it someone else would have been along in a little while.

The fact that a person (or band) were first doesn't make them significant for anything apart from being first!

We owe him f*ckall.
I'm sure Bill Haley would be surprised to learn Elvis was doing Rock 'n' Roll before him.
The Rolling Stones weren't influenced by Elvis, I'd doubt Morrissey was and the world would be a better place without Oasis or Blur.

He was an average singer playing white boy R&B who was well marketed and was accepted by the US public purely because he was white.

The first statement is true, but your reasoning is wrong, none of them actually 'invented' what they are credited with, they mearly took someone elses inventions, tweaked them to make them practical, and made them popular.

That doesn't spoil my argument - it reinforces it :)

whos the best band in the history music? my vote is with the smiths, i know its an almost impossible question to answer but it gets people remenising and talking!

Stone Roses

certainly gets me 'remenising'

I think the Beatles were great, Elvis i just find OK, but i agree Queen was just awful, awful noise

Oh, and the correct answer to the original question is Nick Cave and the bad Seeds :icon_wink

Bob Marley and The Wailers, Jimi Hendrix, Feeder, The Smashing Pumkins and Lynyrd Skynyrd are all up there for me. As are Morbid Angel and Iron Maiden. Couldn't choose a favourite!

Number one for me is Queen. Followed by Jam, Boomtown Rats, Specials, Madness, T Rex and Blondie.

If they aren't too your taste, get over it!

Obviously someone from my age group!
