My favourite Birchisms:

"Biggest bloody Hampton in the village"
"Larruping up Bradgate"
And whenever we walked into his pub, "It's the students!" on the basis that we were quite young and did quite well in the pub quiz, despite the fact none of us were, or indeed ever had been students.
Oh, and Barry Pierpoint on top of the Christmas tree...

Oh no, surely the best Birchism was his one on Robbie Savage:

"If brains were made of chocolate he wouldn't have enough to fill a Smartie"

Some things don't have a place in the modern world.

I don't agree Melts. The whole point of these traditions is that they link us back to earlier times. We should cherish our History. As for "the modern world" that is a careless and with respect a meaningless phrase - it is always the modern world; in 1066 that was the modern world. It is like thne silly term Modern Art - Michelangelo was once modern art.

As for the Birch I enjoyed watching him as a player. He was not as naturally gifted as Frankie Wortho or Keith Weller but he was talented and no one played with more heart or commitment. People on this forum have rightly praised Steve Howard - but Steve Howard has never been as good as Birchenall was in his prime playing in the top division. How we needed an Alan Birchenall on the pitch last season.

Other members of that great team like Shilton and Whitworth have gone their own way. Birch has been with the club through good times and bad and raised tremendous amounts of money for good causes.
The day in 1971 when Jimmy Bloomfield sigjned Keith Weller and Alan Birchenall was a very good day in Leicester's history.
Well done Alan.

There is a big difference between looking back at history with fondness and living in the modern world.

You mention Michelangelo as once being modern art, and indeed it was. But it's no longer modern, it's dated and his style is no longer popular amongst today's artists. It's dead, hence why we look back to it.

People look back on it with fondness, with respect and with admiration, but very few people today are actually recreating that style. Why? Because it doesn't have a place in the modern world, other than to reflect on history and as an object of admiration and appreciation.

The same as this shit, the same as knighthoods etc, the meanings are not the same as they once were, they are token gestures. Let them die.
