Speculation The hysterical and annoying, but traditional, totally unfounded summer 2018 rumours thread.

I’m not that surprised personally. He’s currently fifth choice centre back and hence was clearly bought as “one for the future”, or rather, “one for next season when we ditch Morgan”.

Ideally we’d have signed him next summer but maybe we thought his value would go up, or that others would come sniffing and we may miss out.

Sounds pretty sane & sensible as a theory...so **** knows what it's doing on here!

Although how in the name of god a season in the SPL is going to benefit him in any way is beyond me. May as well send him to Hinckley.

"Getting used to British football" makes no sense. There's no such thing. There's English football & there's Scottish football, no comparison between the two.
Standing next to some immobile lump of a centre forward for 90 minutes is going to teach him what exactly? & how is marking some Slovenian striker who's new in the SPL fresh from failing to impress in Latvia going to prepare him for the Prem? ****ing joke.

Ask Van Dijk

I agree that the SPL is completely different to the Premier League, but we can’t loan him to the Prem so it’s a choice of the SPL or the Championship (or abroad which wouldn’t make any sense).

I think it’s a good move if he plays every week. He’ll be playing in a team that’ll win most games which will help his confidence, he’ll be playing in front of huge crowds, he’ll have a few European games thrown into the mix too.

The Championship still has the likes of Cameron Jerome playing up front, yet everyone seems to think it’s a great standard. It’s not.

I know all of the above. I just enjoy ripping into Scottish football. Any excuse really. How it's even allowed to advertise itself as a professional league is beyond me.

How the mighty have fallen!
In days gone by, most top teams in the English league had a splattering of Jocks in their midst, now they leave Up Norf for our 5th division.

Sad state indeed

Yep. It was mostly impossible to win the old 1st division without having some Jocks down the spine of your team.

Aberdeen winning a European trophy...Dundee Utd making a UEFA Cup final. Mind boggling now.

why don't we just pay up Benny's contract and get him gone he isn't needed here and would be a waste of a spot in the 25 and with the likes of Johnson, Knight Hughes and even Amartey and Fuchs we have enough CB cover even with Benkovic out on loan

What do you think the benefit of paying up his contract is?

Genuinely curious, as I've seen a few posts suggesting this with Benny and/or others.

Why pay up their contracts?

We're still paying them either way, and Benny doesn't exactly seem like a negative influence on squad morale

It may be possible to negotiate a pay-off that is less than the amount outstanding on their contract, as the player could more than make up the difference playing for someone else.

There are lots of costs involved in employing someone, in addition to their wages, so even if we paid the full amount of the contract, there would still be a saving.
If there's no chance a player will contribute it's probably not a good idea having them around the training ground, they could become a negative influence.

Just being devil's advocate but what are we paying him for at the moment?

It's hardly like we would notice if he was gone.

The deadline for loans to EFL teams was 5PM, and there's no news (yet) of any of our players leaving.

The window closes later tonight for most of Europe (including Scotland - so Benkovic to Celtic could still happen).

It will still be open for a while longer in some places, but nowhere any of our players are likely to want to go.

We'd miss the lolz. He's always good entertainment value when he plays.

Done deal then. Even the SPL has got to be better experience than being with the u23s so good move for him IMO. Celtic are in the Europa League as an added bonus.
