The hysterically annoying and totally unfounded, but traditional, January 2025 rumours thread.

I don't see the fuss about Cannon. He's not looked anything special. People thinking he's the saviour next season are just blinded by how shit we are right now.

Freeing up £10m quid on a transfer fee in January is good business. If we can use that to sign a decent defender then it could make the difference in keeping us up.
Yeah there is definitely something in this.
Players always get better the less we see them play in the eyes of the fans.

That said, I quite liked something about cannon and was surprised he wasn't given more game time here.

Oh well, I doubt this one will come back to haunt us.

We are not in a million years staying up. It’s not happening. Pains me to say it, but we are headed one way.

I agree re Cannon not looking special. We're not staying up so he'd probably be useful next season though. Guessing he'd rather leave anyway.

I'd love to know the bottom line reasoning. Do we really need the money now?

I mean, if we do get relegated ("if", pah! who am I kidding?!) then Cannon has shown himself to be useful at that level so why, for the sake of 6 months, would you not hang onto him? We'd only be in the market for a striker anyway.

So I figure he either wants away or (and/or) we really need the spendable cash right at this very moment. If the latter then PSR has stitched us up a kipper.

Tom Cannon - the new Chris Wood.

Each time I've seen him I've liked the look of him. He's got excellent movement and a decent finish. A full season under his belt with Stoke and he'll kick on.

I understand the idea of freeing up £10m and some wages but only if we are investing them wisely. I think we all know that this isn't going to happen so holding onto Cannon for our Championship season would be by far the most sensible thing to do.

I fully expect us to sell him and spunk the cash away on a complete ****ing Edouard.

My assumption is that we are going to bring in two or three bodies so it looks like we're giving it a go

It's three from four going down and the other three look as shit as we are - if they think there are players available then why not? Cannon is shit, so please don't pretend he's not

In reality we know it's pretty futile, but got to make some effort

I'd sooner they sell Cannon, sack this hopeless twat off and bring in an actual football manager, but that ain't gonna happen sadly

Exactly.

Coulibaly is a signing that gives me hope that we might do the right kind of business in January, if we can.

A player that should be good enough to come into our first team and give us a better chance, but is likely to be able to stay next season if we go down.

Right now I think we look set for relegation - but I do still think we're only 2 or 3 decent players away from changing that, or at least giving ourselves a fighting chance.

I admire your optimism, Graz, but what is it that makes you think he's the right kind of business? I doubt many of us have seen him play and he's not a player that, as far as I can see, we've faced any great competition to sign. He may be ok, but until we see him on the pitch, we can't really know that.

Plus - He was cheap in terms of transfer fee, partly because he was going out of contract at the end of the season, partly because he's not really even played at the top level anywhere (mostly Ligue 2 in France and Serie B in Italy).

Minus - Another long term contract for a player who offers no guarantee of success. If it doesn't work out, he's likely going to be another of those players who, in a couple of years, we're saying "****, he's still got 3 years left on his contract".

I always hope things will be ok, but it's hope, rather than optimism, at the moment and we don't have a track record recently of getting it right too often.

Daka has 1 year left on his contract. Why can’t we sell him instead. Anything over 4.6m and we don’t book a loss. (5 year 23m contract is 4.6 per year). Why can’t we flog him back to Salzburg at a discount.
