The problem is that because of Micky Adams tendency to sign too many seasoned professionals it has now created a negative undercurrent amongst a significant number of City fans, who are now opposed to the signing of any player over the age of 30. This negativity has to be overcome, if the right balance can be struck and the right quality bought in, there is no reason why 2 or 3 senior players cannot have a positive effect.
Adams and Levein were two extremes, MA putting most of his faith in veterans, players who lacked desire and hunger, and we saw the results of that decision.
Levein went the other way, his tendency was to sign younger players, who had ambition and drive, yet we seem to lose some character, know how and the ability to grind out results, we had become a soft touch and when the chips were down there was a lack of leaders to take the team and the game by the scruff of the neck.
Under Kelly, we appear to be heading on the right track, he has instilled confidence and got the team playing to it's strengths, although the lack of experience and 'know how' has been evident in some of the soft goals we have conceeded in his time. Also we still seem to lack certain attributes that a couple of 'experienced heads' would provide.
We have too keep an open mind, if RK believes that a 30+ year old defender or midfielder is what we need then we must accept that, support the manager and the player. There can be no room for negativity this season, the last two seasons have proved that both blueprints were too extreme to be successful, what we need is a happy medium to succeed, all successful clubs will have a smattering of older players, it is getting the right player in at the right time, IMO 2 or 3 senior pro's of the right character blended with the obvious younger talent we already have at the club could see us challenging for the play offs.
Please let's not be blinkered.
