We have some fine brains on this forum, I'm sure we've all got plenty of unanswered questions that need answering.

I am looking for answers for the following:

1) Hmmm, I wonder what colour Kouros is?

2) Hmmm, I understand what the "third world" is, but why is it called so, and what exactly are the first and second worlds as I've never heard of them.

Thanks in advance.

the first second and third world is definied by resources, economic levels of prosperity, standard of education, life expectancy, standards of medical care etc-

a first world country (like ours) is rich, has vast resources (or trade links etc), all children are given education, life expectency in the 70s and a national health service

2nd world country-some resources, relative prosperity, kids get at least primary education etc

and im sure you can guess what a 3rd world country is in relation

that might not be the most accurate summary but im pretty sure its good enough for a general guide (i hope!)

Re: Things That Make You "Hmmm"

Cheers Ringo, thank you, that's cleared up that question.

However, why have they referred to these areas as "worlds"? Is it to distance ourselves from blame and responsibility?

Re: Things That Make You "Hmmm"

i think its purely a way of defining countries into certain groups-though maybe i'm not cynical enough

the second world was the communist countries

1st = rich
2nd = communist
3rd = poor

as such, "second world" has fell into disuse after the berlin wall fell and all. in fact first and third aren't used in newspapers/TV they're seen as politically incorrect

world means a large area (as well as a planet itself, this meaning came along later once we knew the planet wasn't flat)

hence "old world" and "the western world"

as for it being the west's fault that the rest is poor, meh, probably true lately due to things like the CAP, USA farming subsidies and protectionism, but Europe got a head start because of its fertile lands. you can hardly blame a region for industrialising quickly and not waiting for others to catch up

But what about Kouros?, what colour is it?

hmmm one from my dad's roster of crappy aftershaves....

er...wasn't it pissy yellow?

as for things that make me go hmmm: do we have free will? it hurts my head to think about it and i'm nowhere near the answer

We do have free will, but only until we get to a state where somebody decides our actions or words are unnaceptable and then prevents us from excercising that right.

So no, we don't have complete free will, we're given a little just so long as we don't abuse it.

somebody prevents us? by what, their free will?

and what happens if we abuse our free will?

They prevent us by use of a dictatorial law, if we abuse it, we are punished financially or restrained for a period of time until we have learned not to use our free will again, or at least not to an extreme.

I s'pose it all boils to right and wrong, but we don't decide right or wrong or where the boundaries are, somebody else does.

Why is it murder to kill a human, but not to kill another species (unless it is protected)? Why do we have the devine right to decide that we are more important than other species? I don't believe it is survival of the species, because the government reserves the right to kill those that it choses fit to die.

you making two statements i disagree with, correct me if i paraphrase them wrongly:-

1) doing too much of what you think is right will get you punished by authorities

did atilla the hun get community service then?
did hitler get his assets seized?

more generally:-

2)that *we* don't decide morals, some other unnamed thing does

i would counter that morals are indeed the product of any creature's society, that altruism and a sense of fairness are valued by society and theft frowned upon. not sure if you saying morals come from government or god, but they don't?
