How would you categorise whales and dolphins?
oh yeah most of western europe came into contact with dolpins and whales every day
:icon_roll
and the lions and hyenas
How would you categorise whales and dolphins?
Lions, tigers, sharks and hyenas?
The question was how you would categorise them. But if that's too difficult.:icon_roll
if the neanderthals were still around, prehaps we would see how very similar we are to the species on a sliding scale, but no, in the developing west there were only four types of animals: humans, pets, food and vermin

Too difficult??? WTF?
Thanks for clearing that up RHYDAL, so the question is how would I categorise them based on DVs scale, I would have to say vermin, possibly food.
But I'm pretty sure that if I had have been alive then, I wouldn't have given exotic African animals too much consideration.
mr macky
you misunderstand, mr rhydal wanted my opinion on how i would classify animals, given half a chance
who on earth would want to know YOUR opinion?
The point I'm trying to get to is that to my mind there are only two categories of animals i.e. humans and non humans.
The category of pet and vermin are just ways of describing an animal who is a potential food source, but who's worth is considered in relation to it's greater food supply potential, be that positive in the case of pets (guard/ sheep dogs, horses) or negative in the case of vermin (rats, foxes etc.).
Goes back to the old chestnut of mine "Dolphin Friendly Tuna". In that respect dolphins are vermin not food. If you don't care about the millions of tuna which suffocate so you've got a filling for your jacket potato (MHS), then why would a few dolphins meeting a gorey death at the hands of oriental fishermen be a bother?

The original question was 'why is it murder to kill humans but not other species' and I would argue that the question answers itself from my point of view. It's not murder cos they're not humans. Killing any animal for food or to protect food is acceptable, and whilst killing animals for sport is somewhat pointless, it is no more futile than protecting any particular species based on some sentimental hierarchy or classification.I'm really not sure what point you are trying to make.
What is there to gain by not further classifying an animal based on it's value to you as a human?
It's only really a bother if you aren't also eating the dolphins, make them food not vermin.
Bloody hell, even the Welshie is at it! :icon_redf :icon_lol: :icon_lol: mmm tuna *drools*

Has anybody tried dolphin? Is it fishy or mammally?
