We've now played six league games under our new management. All the new signings have had some game time. We've changed formation and we've had plenty of results/performances to get excited about. So what do we make of our prospects this season?

Firstly, in terms of our points return, I reckon we're about four points ahead of an average start. The West Ham away result was excellent and stands out for me as three points gained. We clearly have retained the spirit and confidence from the end of last season too.

Ranieri has done very well to keep the players together. It would have been easy for them to have started badly given the summer of negative headlines and chaos. Managing to retain the staffing structure is also clearly a plus.

On the downside, there is a problem with us defensively with our current back four. Even on the first day. it was apparent. Playing a back four is something we couldn't do last season and something we don't look very good at this time either. Much will depend on Ranieri's ability to mould the defensive side of our game over the coming months. I like some of the signs, like us retreating to conserve energy for spells in recent matches and how we've deliberately compacted the game a couple of times. This is all very Italian and not like us at all. However, I remain unconvinced of our current players ability to defend as he will want them to.

Of the players, I've not been impressed with Schmeichel. He ended last season so well but started this one just like he started the last one. I can't help thinking that an equally sound keeper technically but three inches taller would serve us better.

De Laet is not and never will be a good enough right back. I think Huth has been a shadow of his commanding self from last year. Morgan (aside from yesterday) was been excellent. Schlupp isn't a natural defender but adds so much pace and power to the team that he's now a key man. The two new defenders have both looked some way short of what is required at the moment.

In midfield, Inler isn't good enough (yet). Drinkwater has stepped up (so far) and Kante is a revelation.

Albrighton has started well on the left but does appear a luxury at times. I'd rather he was on the right. Okazaki is okay. On a good day, he has a touch of the Steve Claridge about him (this is a compliment) and on a bad day, he has the look of a Matty Fryatt (not a compliment).

Our stars are clearly Vardy and Mahrez. Both have been outstanding and have carried the team at times.

If we insist on a back four, I think the defence needs some surgery. Maybe; Simpson, Huth Morgan and Fuchs would be more solid. They'd certainly be more defensive minded and experienced. Ahead, Kante and Drinkwater should be certain starters. I'd play Schlupp wide left and Albrighton wide right. Then have Mahrez in a free role behind Vardy.

If we did play a back three (and I think a lot of our players look better in that formation) we could afford another forward player (probably Ulloa).

The twelve points we've acquired is only seven fewer than the number we started April with. Therefore, you'd think that we'll be better equipped for a season outside the bottom three. But it is still early days and much is still up in the air. I really don't think Ranieri has been able or willing to introduce his ways very much. I think he's currently presiding over a team that are quite different from anything he's managed before. I've been impressed with him as a person though and with his ability to spot what's needed during a game and make sensible improvements. I'm not sure how much of my approval of him is based on him not being at all like his predecessor and how much is earned. I do still have my fingers crossed about him.

They have definitely been the stars but I think we need to move away from the idea that they have carried the team. There have been many excellent performances this season that have contributed to our success. For example, despite Ritchie De Laet obvious limitations, he has had periods of games where he has contributed hugely to our success. I could also mention others... Morgan, Schlupp, Drinkwater, King, Albrighton, Kante have all been superb in parts.

A very thoughtful post BN.

One thing that I would point out is that only the very top 4 - 5 teams have the absolute balance across all positions. In our case we lose some defensive solidity by being so attack minded and by being so quick in getting De Laet and Schlupp forward.

Our start this season is undoubtedly easier than last season when we played Everton, Chelsea and Man U.

Our biggest test is next Saturday when we entertain Arsenal - albeit a team low on points and confidence this far. Arsenal are one of the teams in the 4 - 5 I refer to in my first paragraph.

I like Ranieri's style and his undoubted 'at ease' way in which he conducts himself with the media - and whether people like it or not it is part of a managers job.

Is he an improvement on NP - yes for sure in all aspects. I was a little bit worried we would lose our togetherness and spirit over the close season - this fear is proving to be totally without substance.

Before a ball was kicked I predicted we would finish tenth - I think we may sneak ninth.

All in all a superb start that needs to be built upon.

It's no secret that I am a fan of Ranieri, but I think our first half performances recently are a reflection of the fact that he is unfamiliar with the opposition.

The fact that he has been able to correct this gives me confidence that this will improve.

The defence is a concern, particularly down our right, but I think this is a sacrifice we make consciously to allow Mahrez greater freedom.

Although the media talk a lot about our energy and passion, I think we are playing with a lot more intelligence this season, and our endeavour always has a purpose and a air of confidence that we lacked last season.

What a great analysis! Very incisive and absolutely spot on.

I think the outlook for the PL season is actually fascinating this year. Normally at least 1 if not 2 of the promoted sides struggle for goals and have already been written off for the season but all 3 have looked very capable of pulling off results at times.

That leaves Newcastle & Sunderland looking very exposed at this point even though something tells me Newcastle will somehow survive I think it will be Sunderlands year to finally go down. That leaves, in my eyes, 10-12 teams who will be trying to fighting to avoid the other 2 relegation spots.

For this reason - to get points on the board so early as we have is a huge boost regardless of some of the iffy 1st half performances in the last couple of games. I agree both full-backs operate better as wing-backs as defensively they have severe weaknesses and thats why Huth has looked to have struggled so much this season but the offset of that is we really only have 3 defensive minded players (2 CB's + one DM) in our outfield 10 and the trade-off is we have more going forward.

What is also on our side is our strength in depth and with RB as an exception (ignoring Simpson, we do have cover in every position and when it comes to December / January and injuries & suspensions then hopefully we will have more than our rivals.

Last season is so hard to compare against due to our contrasting fortunes across the season - a promising start, a woeful middle (where only once or twice we were played off the park) and then an end to the season which will be almost impossible to replicate.

All in all I would say an excellent start to the season in terms of points gained and results, a promising start on performances with some open questions / concerns in what is likely to be a very tight league apart from the top 3 and bottom 1

I don't see how anyone can be anything but delighted with our start, we are the only unbeaten side in the division and not only that have shown great character and spirit in every game. Mahrez and Vardy as mentioned have been our stand out players, Morgan (bar Saturday's little blip) has also been fantastic. Kante will be, alongside the three aforementioned, one of the first names on the team sheet soon but he needs to play centrally as he is far more effective there.

Yes we have our defensive worries but we have also shown we have plenty of attacking threat and will have enough to see off the majority of the struggling sides in the division. I think if Albrighton were to pick up an injury it would be an opportunity to solidify the side. Move Schlupp to left midfield and play Fuchs at LB.

I can't say the same for Villa, Newcastle and Sunderland. Who don't really look that capable of scoring and definitely look suspect at the back. Bournemouth you would expect to come unstuck defensively at some point. Watford and Norwich aren't going to be far away from the drop either.

I expect that we should have enough to finish above all those sides and perhaps WBA too, then it just depends on how well we can perform against top half sides as to whether we can go any higher.

We have been fortunate that, in our initial six matches, we have played three of the four teams that have been least effective so far. Although, we're level on points with West Ham and beat them, they've actually had a much more effective start than us. The reason I say this is because they've eliminated theoretically tough away matches and gathered nine points from them. We've still got those matches to play. Aside from our result against Man Utd last season, we didn't win once against a top six team (five points out of thirty six and only one out of eighteen away from home).

Saturday's match with Arsenal will be a key test of our capabilities. We got a draw from this fixture last year, but it was a fortunate one as they outplayed us for much of the game and we were lucky that they had no striker of note (Sanogo!). This will be an interesting and revealing test of Ranieri, our shape and, potentially, our fans patience.

It's much easier to persuade players to sign for you when you're doing well. If you're struggling in January and need to add players, being threatened by relegation doesn't help.

Hopefully we can maintain a decent league position for the rest of the season (top half would be tremendous). This would allow us to present ourselves as "established", to prospective signings, something that, along with the vast sums of money coming into the league, would make us an attractive club to join.

Agree with most of what you say. But I remember the Arsenal home game differently...I thought Arsenal were lucky to get the draw. Maybe I'm just biased.
