Robert Kelly will "fight tooth and nail" to ward off potential suitors for his young players

The new manager is desperate to restore some much-needed stability at Leicester City.

But he knows that, just as has been the case this season, anything can happen.

And Kelly's resolve to hold on to the nucleus of his squad could soon be tested.

Wigan Athletic are reported to be preparing a £500,000 bid for 18-year-old defender Richard Stearman, while defender Patrick Kisnorbo has reportedly attracted interest from Everton and Birmingham.

Kelly, who recently signed a one-year rolling contract, said: "We will start next season with a clean slate but people realise it has to be done differently now. The budget isn't what it was.

"For too many years, the club has had some instability, had different managers, loads of players in and out. Now I think the club needs some sound footings, some solid foundations.

"This has been started over the last 12 months but I know the way football works if someone comes in with a massive offer.

"I don't want to lose them, I will fight tooth and nail to keep them, but what can I do?

"It is important we keep the nucleus of what we have for a period of time that allows us to grow and build. We have got younger players signed on longer contracts. The ones we think can help, the ones we wanted to keep, are on longer contracts.

"At least there is not a revolving door - when everyone reports back in July we are not going to be shaking hands introducing ourselves to one another. We have got somewhere to go from a sound foundation."

Skipper Paddy McCarthy is well aware that City's revival late in the season will have attracted interest from clubs who will know of the club's weak bargaining position.

But he insisted: "I don't think we can afford to lose anybody.

"Obviously, there is going to be a lot of interest in some of our players but hopefully no-one will go and we will get a couple of new players in.

"We have got a lot of good young players here who will stand us in good stead for the future, ambitious players who will be looking to reach the play-offs next season at least. That is what we will be aiming for."

Watford are a good example of doing things on a tight budget. Why not us?
Of course we can, I am not saying we need to spend anything at all. It's just a random quote from RK being as our budget hasn't been good for the past 5 years

Well the budget is about 5/6/7million worse this season so it's not really a random quote. Our budget was one of the highest the last two seasons due to the parachute payments.

Not that you can't do well on a low budget, in theory it is just harder to do.

£500,000 is pish!

That wouldn't buy you a 2 bedroomed house where I live! Absolutely NO!!!!

Sell him and I will send back my newly purchased season ticket!

Two things that came out of this story for me. First, it's nice to hear Rob Kelly still saying all of the right things - ok, it's not rocket science but it's comforting to know how highly he values stability. Second, I think Paddy is going to grow to be a proper captain of this club, something that we've not had for years. He seems to be maturing, he's always been committed and his performances in the last two months have been exemplary. It's been a long time since we've had a captain that people can identify with - I'm thinking Elliott, Walsh etc. - I hope (and think) that Paddy might get close to winning the respect from players and fans that those two had.

Ditto

Too be honest, it is just club propoganda, the truth is they are hardly going to come out and openly admit that every player has his price, the likelihood is 1 or 2 of the better players are likely to be sacrificed if a fantastic offer comes in that allows Kelly to wheel and deal in the transfer market.

As for Stearman, as soon as Chimbonda goes, I expect the bids to fly in from Wigan, but were this too happen then it would be likely that a number of other clubs would enter the chase thus creating a bit of an auction. Maybe we could negotiate a deal based on performances, 1.5 mill up front with another 1.5m based on apperances and the success of the club, and a years loan back to us would be good.

Kelly is no longer going to fight Tooth & Nail.

Tooth has been made redundant, Nail has not had his contract renewed and Rob has calmed down after a nice cup of hebal tea.
