Why is Harry McKirdy playing for our under 23s tonight?

He's was a decent player for Carlisle last season, but they didn't renew his contract. He started this season at Port Vale but was dropped from their squad when the transfer window closed.

Maybe he's a free agent and we're just looking at him to see if he can make up the numbers in our squad. But he's 23 now and couldn't get into the Port Vale team...

I think the opinion of people who watched him for Carlisle was that he's a talented player who should be playing at a higher level than league two, but he's let down by his attitude. Maybe we think we can fix that.

Another player playing tonight is 21 year old Cole Dasilva. He was released by Brentford last summer without playing a game for them. Previously with Chelsea.

He was at the Luton Academy with James Justin.

Our academy is littered with shit from other teams. The strategy is a bit strange tbh.

These games can strike me as tryouts, or match practice, or fitness gathering for players coming back off injury, where the outcome is of little relevance (other than order in a league table) It must be difficult for any manager to develop consistency under those terms, being part of a bigger plan. I was stunned to see how many U23s we had! Most will be weeded out and many perhaps never seeing game time. Different world innit?

The U18 team I was in once got dicked 13-0. Our coach told us not to worry as their team had 2 internationals in it, playing because their senior side didn't have a match that weekend. We were disbanded a few weeks later. Those of us that could make the grade in senior football stayed on. As for the others... no idea. There was no team for them. Perhaps they joined one of our Sunday social teams. Or simply gave up.
