Monday 24th November 1980 - lost 1-2 - Bobby Smith (penalty)

I seem to remember that this was one of a series of home friendlies that were arranged after we were knocked out of the League Cup at the first hurdle - lost both legs of the 2nd round to WBA (0-1. 0-1).

We had also played Hertha Berlin three weeks earlier (also on the Monday), a 'return leg' of a pre-season game at their place. In the February, we had Red Star Belgrade over for a game - this time on a Wednesday - Jimmy Melrose scoring an hat-trick to no reply.

This was the days of Jock Wallace and he no doubt saw the games as a way of punishing the players for their performances against West Brom.

If we played Australia now, we'd lose half our fecking squad

Hertha Berlin and Red Star were Eastern bloc at the time. So not as such the kings of Europe exactly. It would be like us playing Artmedia Bratislava now.

Hertha Berlin were a Bundersliga side from West Berlin...

Red Star Belgrade made it to the 1979 UEFA Cup finals, so they were a quality side at the time. They were also quite strong throughout the 1980's and early 1990's - winning the 1991 UEFA Cup.

They didn't win the UEFA cup in 1991, they won the European cup, beating Marseillle on penalties.

I saw them play Hinckley Town in a friendly around that time, they had several well known Yugoslavian internationals in the team. Not surprisingly they won something like 8-0!

Probably true. But the point I am making his Eastern bloc countries due to their admin and government pre-the fall of the Berlin Wall are not the most attractive clubs because of their background. Ie. Bigger Club were not going to invite them.

And my point was... at this moment, a friendly against Watford would seem glamorous, let alone a series of them against sides from overseas.
