I've got some direct experience of this as my right leg was snapped in half by some nutter from Bardon Hill in a Sunday league game two years ago. As an older gentlemen (just under 40), it was recommended that I leave the intramedullary rod (i.e. pin) in permanently as it wouldn't be affected by bone growth.
As an 18 year old, I would have thought that he would have been due in soon to have the pin removed. So it sounds like he's been really unfortunate with this break.
